Sulfur hexafluoride facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sulfur hexafluoride, often called SF6, is a special chemical compound. Its chemical formula is SF6. It's made of sulfur and fluorine atoms.

BBC News has called SF6 "the most powerful greenhouse gas known to humanity." This means it's very good at trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere. Even though it's powerful, it's used a lot in the electrical industry. It helps prevent short circuits and accidents. In 2017, leaks of this gas in the UK and the rest of the EU were like adding 1.3 million cars to the road!

What is Sulfur Hexafluoride Like?

Sulfur hexafluoride is a gas that you can't see or smell. It's also very heavy, about five times heavier than air. This gas is very unreactive, meaning it doesn't easily mix or react with other chemicals. Because it's such a strong greenhouse gas, there are now rules about how it can be used.

How is SF6 Made?

SF6 is made by combining sulfur with fluorine gas. During this process, another toxic chemical called disulfur decafluoride can also form, which needs to be carefully removed.

What is SF6 Used For?

Sulfur hexafluoride is used in many different ways:

  • In Electronics and Electrical Devices: It's very important in electronics and various electrical devices. It helps prevent sparks and keeps equipment safe. You can find it in large Electrical substations.
  • As a Test Gas: Because it's easy to detect, SF6 can be used to check how gas flows in systems, like a heater.
  • In Torpedoes: Believe it or not, it's used in some torpedoes! When SF6 is sprayed on Lithium, it creates a lot of heat. This heat can turn water into steam, which then helps to power the torpedo forward.
  • For Voice Changes: If you breathe in SF6, it can make your voice sound much deeper. This is the opposite effect of breathing in helium gas, which makes your voice sound high and squeaky.

Is SF6 Safe?

Sulfur hexafluoride itself is not poisonous. However, because it's so heavy, it can fill up a closed room or space. If it pushes out all the oxygen, a person in that space could suffocate because there wouldn't be enough air to breathe.

Why is SF6 a Greenhouse Gas?

Measurements of Sulfur Hexafluoride in the atmosphere over time.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says that SF6 is the most powerful greenhouse gas they have studied. It traps heat 22,800 times more effectively than CO2 over a 100-year period.

Measurements show that the amount of SF6 in the atmosphere has been slowly increasing. This gas also stays in the atmosphere for a very long time, possibly between 800 and 3200 years! This is because it's very stable and doesn't break down easily.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the amount of SF6 in the air increased by about seven percent each year. This was mainly because it was used in making magnesium and by power companies and electronics manufacturers. Even though it's very powerful, only small amounts of SF6 are released compared to carbon dioxide. Because of this, its overall effect on global warming is currently less than 0.2 percent.

In Europe, there are rules called the F-Gas directive that control how SF6 can be used. Since 2006, it's mostly banned for many uses, except for important equipment like high-voltage electrical switches.
