Summit is a small town located in Schoharie County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,072 people lived there. The town got its name from a high point called Mount Wharton, which people once thought was the highest spot in the county.
The Town of Summit is found on the western edge of Schoharie County. It is located northeast of a city called Oneonta.

History of Summit
Early Settlement and Formation
The first people started to settle in the area around 1794. This was after the end of the American Revolution, a war that helped the United States become an independent country.
The town of Summit was officially created in 1819. It was formed by taking parts from two other towns: Jefferson and Cobleskill.
Historic Places
A building known as the House at 461 Spruce Lake Road is an important historical site in Summit. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. This list includes places that are important to the history of the United States.

Land and Water Features
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town of Summit covers about 37.5 square miles (97.08 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 37.1 square miles (96.05 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.3 square miles (1.03 square kilometers), is water.
Mountains and Rivers
Mount Wharton is the highest point in Schoharie County. It stands at about 2,400 feet (730 meters) tall. The mountain is named after the person who owned the land. A stream called Charlotte Creek flows from the town towards the southwest. This creek eventually joins the Susquehanna River.
Town Borders and Roads
The western edge of Summit forms the border with Otsego County. New York State Route 10 is a main highway that runs through the town from north to south.

Communities and Places in Summit
Summit has several smaller communities and interesting locations:
- Beards Hollow – A small village located on County Road 23 in the northeastern part of the town.
- Bear Gulch – A valley found in the northern area of Summit.
- Bear Gulch Lake – A small lake located southeast of the main Summit village.
- Charlotte Creek – This stream flows out of the southwestern part of Summit.
- Charlotte Valley – A long valley in the southwestern section of Summit.
- Charlotteville – A village in the southwestern part of the town. It is located where County Roads 6 and 64 meet. This community was once the largest in the town because a Methodist seminary (a school for religious studies) operated there from 1850 to 1875.
- Eminence – A place southeast of Summit village. It used to be called "Dutch Hill."
- Lutheranville – A village west of Summit village, close to the western town line. It was once known as "Tar Hollow" due to a past event.
- Rossman Pond – A lake in the northeastern corner of Summit.
- Summit – This is the main village of Summit. It is located on NY-10 where it meets County Roads 6, 16, and 20. It was once called "Summit Four Corners."
- Summit Lake – A small lake found northeast of Summit village.
Notable People from Summit
- John Frank Morrison – He was a major general in the U.S. Army. He was born in Charlotteville, a community within Summit.
