Jefferson is a town located in Schoharie County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,333 people lived here. The town is found on the southwestern edge of the county. It is also located east of the city of Oneonta.

History of Jefferson, New York
The area that is now Jefferson was first settled around 1793. These early settlers came from New England. However, no settlers lived there during the American Revolution.
In 1803, the town of Jefferson was officially created. It was formed from a part of the Town of Blenheim.
Two important historic places in Jefferson are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson and the Parker 13-Sided Barn.
Geography and Natural Features
Jefferson covers a total area of about 43.4 square miles (112.4 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 43.3 square miles (112.0 square kilometers), is land. Only a small part, about 0.1 square miles (0.4 square kilometers), is water.
The western border of the town is also the border of Delaware County.
The West Branch of the Delaware River starts right here in Jefferson. Streams in the eastern part of the town flow into the Mohawk River Watershed. Streams in the western part flow into the Susquehanna River Watershed.

Based on the census from 2000, there were 1,285 people living in Jefferson. These people made up 520 households and 364 families. The town had about 11.5 people per square kilometer (29.7 people per square mile).
Most of the people in Jefferson were White (96.42%). There were also smaller groups of African American (1.71%), Native American (0.16%), and Asian (0.08%) residents. About 1.17% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.

Out of the 520 households, about 27.9% had children under 18 living with them. More than half (58.3%) were married couples living together. About 7.5% were led by a female with no husband present.

Communities and Locations in Jefferson
- Arabia – This is a small village, also known as a hamlet. It is located near the northern border of the town on County Road 64.
- Baird Corners – You can find this spot north of Jefferson village on NY-10.
- East Jefferson – Another hamlet, located northeast of Jefferson village on County Road 16.
- Jefferson – This is the main hamlet of Jefferson. It is located right on Route 10.
- Mount Jefferson – This is a small mountain. It stands 2,733 feet (833 meters) tall. It is located north of where the Delaware River begins.
- South Jefferson – A hamlet located southeast of Jefferson village on NY-10. The Stewart House and Howard–Stewart Family Cemetery is a historic site here. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
- West Jefferson – This hamlet is west of Jefferson village. It is close to the western town line and the meeting point of County Roads 2A and 15.
