A Look Back in Time
Summitville used to be a very important place for travel. Its name comes from the fact that the highest point, or "summit," of the Delaware and Hudson Canal was located here. From this high point, water would flow downhill in two directions. One way led towards the Hudson River, and the other went towards the Delaware River.
Later, a major train station was built in Summitville. This station belonged to the New York, Ontario and Western Railway (O&W). The O&W had a special junction here. From this junction, train lines branched off to other towns. Some lines went northeast to Kingston. Other lines went southwest to Port Jervis and Monticello.
