Anthem is a special kind of town in Arizona, USA. It's called a planned community because it was designed from the start. Anthem is located in Maricopa County, near the big city of Phoenix. In 2020, about 23,190 people lived there.

History of Anthem

Anthem was built by a company called Del Webb in 1998. It was planned as a modern community in the hills, about 30 miles north of downtown Phoenix. Magazines like Parenting and Phoenix Magazine have called Anthem one of the best places for families.

Family-Friendly Activities

Anthem is known for its many activities all year round, especially for families. The community center has lots of sports like soccer, baseball, basketball, and swimming. They also offer martial arts for kids of all ages.

The town has a huge pool, bigger than an Olympic size. There's also a water park with slides and different areas for swimming. You can find paths for walking and biking all over town, plus small parks everywhere.

Anthem also has a large 63-acre community park. This park includes an amphitheater, sports fields for volleyball, soccer, and baseball. It even has a train, lakes, and special pavilions.

Past Weather Events

On July 31, 2012, Anthem had a huge rainstorm. About 5 inches of rain fell in just 90 minutes. This caused a lot of flooding and people needed to be rescued. Experts later said this was a "one-in-1,000 year rain catastrophe."

Geography of Anthem

Anthem is built on about 5,856 acres of land. It sits at the base of two mountains, Daisy Mountain and Gavilan Peak. The main part of Anthem covers about 7.9 square miles. The town's height above sea level ranges from 1,760 to 2,428 feet.

About 36% of Anthem is kept as open space. This includes 291 acres of natural hillsides. The town is surrounded by the New River area on its north, east, and south sides. Part of Anthem on the west side is actually within the city limits of Phoenix.

Anthem's Climate

Anthem is located in the upper Sonoran Desert. Because it's higher up, it's usually a bit cooler than Phoenix. It also gets more rain than the areas south of it.
