Sutton-on-Sea is a friendly village in Lincolnshire, England. It sits right next to a long, sandy beach by the North Sea. It was once called Sutton in the Marsh or Sutton le Marsh.

Sutton-on-Sea is part of the larger area called Mablethorpe and Sutton. The village has many useful places. These include a post office, places to eat, a general store, and a hotel. There is also a fun paddling pool right on the seafront. The southern part of the village is known as Sandilands.

A Look Back at Sutton-on-Sea's History

Ancient Forests and Big Floods

If you visit Sutton-on-Sea at very low tide, you might see something amazing. You can spot the remains of an old forest on the beaches. This forest was covered by rising sea levels about 3,000 years ago.

Through history, the village sometimes faced problems with sea flooding. The last big flood happened on January 31, 1953. A huge ten-foot storm wave broke through the sea walls. This caused a lot of damage to the village.

The Church of Saint Clement

The village church is named after Saint Clement. It is a very old and important building, known as a Grade II listed building. The church you see today was built in 1818–19. It was built in a new spot because the older church was destroyed by the sea.

How Railways Changed Sutton-on-Sea

Early Tramways and Trains

Imagine a tramway running right on the road! The Alford and Sutton Tramway did just that. It connected Alford town to Sutton-on-Sea. This tramway started in 1884 but only ran for five years.

Later, a proper railway line came to Sutton-on-Sea. The Sutton-on-Sea railway station opened in 1886. It was part of the Sutton and Willoughby Railway. This new railway connected Sutton-on-Sea to the south. It made it easy for holiday trains from busy industrial areas to reach the coast.

Growing Popularity by Rail

In 1888, the railway line was extended to Mablethorpe. The railway connection helped Sutton-on-Sea grow a lot. For example, between July and December 1889, over 40,000 passengers came to Sutton. This was even more than the number of people who visited Mablethorpe in the same time!

However, all the railway lines in this area closed on October 5, 1970.

Plans for a New Harbour

For a long time, people thought Sutton-on-Sea would be a great place for a new fishing harbour. In 1884, a company was given permission to build docks and a railway line here. But they could not get enough money to build the harbour.

Later, in 1886, another group tried to make the harbour happen. They asked the Great Northern Railway for help. The railway company was good at moving fresh fish to cities. But they decided the harbour would be too expensive and not worth it.

The idea came up again in 1891. Another railway company, the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway, planned a railway line all the way to Sutton. They thought Sutton was the best spot for a safe port on the coast. This was a huge project, but again, the company could not raise enough money. The harbour was never built.
