Suvra Mukherjee (born September 17, 1940 – died August 18, 2015) was the First Lady of India. She held this important role from 2012 until her passing in 2015.

About Suvra Mukherjee's Early Life and Family
Suvra Mukherjee was born on September 17, 1940. Her birthplace was the Jessore District in what was then the Bengal Presidency. This area is now part of Bangladesh. When she was 10 years old, her family moved to Calcutta, India.
On July 13, 1957, she married Pranab Mukherjee. They had two sons and one daughter together. Suvra Mukherjee was a very educated person. She earned two master's degrees, one in history and another in political science. In the early 1970s, she also taught history and English grammar in West Midnapore.
Suvra Mukherjee's Artistic Talents
Suvra Mukherjee was a talented singer. She was especially known for singing Rabindra Sangeet. These are songs composed by the famous poet Rabindranath Tagore. She performed in Tagore's dance-dramas for many years. Her performances took place in India, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
She also started a group called the Geetanjali Troupe. This group aimed to share Tagore's ideas through song and dance. They often practiced at her home. Suvra Mukherjee shared her love for classical dance with her daughter, Sharmistha Mukherjee. They even performed together sometimes. Besides music, she was also a painter. Her paintings were shown in both group and solo art shows.

The Passing of Suvra Mukherjee
Suvra Mukherjee passed away on August 18, 2015. She was 74 years old. She died in a hospital in New Delhi, India. She had been dealing with breathing problems and was being treated for a heart condition.
Many important people shared their sadness after her death. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, said she would be remembered as someone who loved art, culture, and music. He also mentioned that her kind nature made everyone like her. Her friend, Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, attended the funeral. She said that Bangladesh had lost a great friend and supporter with Suvra Mukherjee's passing.
