History of Swan Creek

Swan Creek got its name from a creek that flows through the area. People believe there were many swans living near the creek, which is how it got its name! The creek was first shown on a map in 1864. Back then, it was part of a very large farm called Canning Downs. Later, around 1883, a smaller farm also named Swan Creek was created from this big farm.

The first school in the area, Swan Creek Lower State School, opened on June 20, 1870. Around 1887, its name was changed to Swan Creek State School. This school taught children for many years before it closed on December 12, 1997. The old school building was located on Swan Creek School Road.

In 1873, the Anglican Church bought land to build a church next to the school. Local people helped raise money for the church. It was officially opened on February 22, 1874. The church was named St Andrew's. It closed in 1973, but the church building is still there today. There is also a cemetery behind the church.

Swan Creek Railway Line

A railway line, called the Killarney railway line, reached Swan Creek in 1884. This meant people could travel by train from Warwick to Swan Creek. The Swan Creek railway station was built to serve the area. The full line to Killarney was finished in 1885. However, the Killarney line eventually closed on May 1, 1964.

Swan Creek School of Arts

The Swan Creek School of Arts building was opened on February 9, 1909. It was a community hall where people could gather for events, learn new things, and enjoy entertainment. It was opened by George Barnes, who was a local politician at the time. This building is located on Warwick Yangan Road.

In 2016, Swan Creek had a population of 139 people. By 2021, the number of people living in Swan Creek had grown slightly to 161.
