Yangan is a small country town and area in the Southern Downs Region of Queensland, Australia. It's a quiet place where people live and work. In 2021, about 404 people called Yangan home.

Exploring Yangan's Location

The town of Yangan is right in the middle of its local area. The Warwick-Yangan Road leads into the town from the west. Another road, the Yangan-Killarney Road, starts in town and goes towards the south-east.

Natural Features Around Yangan

Swan Creek flows through the area. It enters from the north-east and passes just south of the town. This creek is a branch of the larger Condamine River.

South of Yangan, people dig up Sandstone from quarries. This special rock is used for building. Besides mining, the land is used for growing crops and for raising animals like cattle or sheep.

A Look Back at Yangan's History

The area was first known as Upper Swan Creek. But in 1887, it got the name Yangan from its railway station. The name Yangan is an Aboriginal word that means "proceed" or "go away."

Yangan is also known for its high-quality sandstone blocks. This sandstone has been used in many buildings across Australia.

Schools and Railways in Yangan's Past

The first school, Swan Creek (No. 2) School, opened on May 27, 1874. It changed its name a few times, finally becoming Yangan State School in 1887.

A railway line, called the Killarney railway line, opened in 1884. It connected Warwick to Emu Vale. This line had stations at Mount Sturt and Yangan, both within the current Yangan area. However, the railway line closed down on May 1, 1964.

St Peter's Anglican Church

On May 15, 1905, a new Anglican church called St Peter's was officially opened. The church was designed by Conrad Dornbusch. The last church service was held there on March 25, 2018. The church was officially closed on July 21, 2018.
