The Story of Taco Tico
Taco Tico began in 1962 in Wichita, Kansas. Two brothers, Dan and Robin Foley, started the first restaurant. They had worked for their cousins at another Mexican fast-food place called Taco Grande.
In 1967, Taco Tico started to grow. They began to "franchise" new locations. This means other people could open their own Taco Tico restaurants using the company's name and recipes. By 1980, Taco Tico was very popular in its region.
Changes Over Time
In 1988, the Foley brothers sold Taco Tico to a new owner. This new owner decided to change the special meat recipe that made Taco Tico tacos unique. However, customers did not like the new flavor. Because of this, Taco Tico soon went back to using its original, popular recipe.
Facing Challenges and Reopening
Like many businesses, Taco Tico has faced some challenges. In 2013, some of their restaurants had temporary issues with paying state taxes. This led to a few locations closing for a short time.
However, new owners stepped in to help. They worked to reopen many of the restaurants. For example, in February 2014, one of the Wichita locations reopened. Later that year, a closed restaurant in Topeka also reopened under new ownership.
Where You Can Find Taco Tico Today
Taco Tico has continued to operate and grow. By November 2018, the company had several stores in Kansas, including two in Wichita. They also had locations in Arkansas City, Augusta, Derby, and Newton, Kansas.
In 2019, a new store opened in El Dorado, Kansas. Today, Taco Tico restaurants can be found in several states. These include places like Claremore, Oklahoma, Texarkana, Texas, Lexington, Kentucky, and Mason City, Iowa.
