Taraneh Alidoosti (born January 12, 1984) is a famous actress from Iran. She is best known around the world for her role in the movie The Salesman (2016). This film won the Best Foreign Language Film Award at the 89th Academy Awards. Many film critics in Iran have called her the best Iranian movie actress of her time.

Taraneh Alidoosti's Acting Journey
Taraneh Alidoosti started her acting journey in 2000 at the acting school of Amin Tarokh. Her first main role was in the movie I'm Taraneh, 15 (2002). Critics really liked her performance as a 15-year-old girl facing tough challenges.
She won the Bronze Leopard for Best Actress at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2002. She also won the Crystal Simorgh for Best Actress at the 20th Fajr Film Festival. This made her the youngest person ever to win that award. She was also nominated three times in a row for Best Actress at the Fajr Film Festival for her first three movies.
Taraneh is known for choosing her roles carefully in both theater and movies. She worked with Oscar-winning director Asghar Farhadi in several films. One of these was Fireworks Wednesday in 2006. She also starred in The Salesman, which won an Oscar in 2017.
She also played the main character in the popular Iranian TV series Shahrzad for three seasons.

Taraneh Alidoosti comes from a talented family. Her father, Hamid Alidoosti, was a professional football player for Iran's national team. He was the first Iranian to play for a foreign team in Germany. After playing, he became a football coach.
Her mother, Nadereh Hakim-Elahi, is a sculptor and an art teacher. Taraneh had one brother, Poyan, who sadly passed away in an accident in March 2005 when he was 16 years old.
Taraneh Alidoosti got married in 2013 and has one daughter.

Why Taraneh Alidoosti Boycotted the Oscars
On January 26, 2017, Taraneh Alidoosti announced she would not attend the 89th Academy Awards. Her movie, The Salesman, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. She chose to boycott the event to protest new travel rules that the Trump administration planned for people from Iran.
Taraneh Alidoosti's Detention
On December 17, 2022, authorities in Iran detained Taraneh Alidoosti. This happened after she posted a message on Instagram. In her post, she criticized the execution of Mohsen Shekari, which was linked to the Mahsa Amini protests. Her message said, "Your silence means the support of the oppression and the oppressor. His name was Mohsen Shekari. Every international organization who is watching this bloodshed and not taking action is a disgrace to humanity."
Support for Taraneh Alidoosti
Many people from the international arts community spoke out. About 600 artists from 30 countries signed a letter asking for her release. Famous actors like Olivia Colman, Jessica Chastain, Cillian Murphy, and Kate Winslet were among those who signed.
Robert De Niro and the Tribeca Festival also asked for her immediate release. Film festivals like Cannes, Berlinale, and the European Film Academy also made statements supporting her.
Taraneh Alidoosti's Release
On January 4, 2023, Taraneh Alidoosti was released from detention. She was released after bail was paid, which was reported to be around £20,000.
