Taraneh Alidoosti (Persian: ترانه عليدوستی; born on January 12, 1984) is a well-known actress from Iran. She is famous around the world for her role in the movie The Salesman (2016). This movie won the Best Foreign Language Film Award at the 89th Academy Awards.
Many film critics in Iran have voted her as the best Iranian movie actress of her time. She has won several awards for her acting.

Acting Career
Taraneh Alidoosti started acting after studying at an acting school in 2000. Her first main role was in the movie I'm Taraneh, 15 (2002). In this film, she played a 15-year-old girl who faces many challenges but is determined to raise her child. Critics really liked her performance.
She won the Bronze Leopard for Best Actress at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2002. She also won the Crystal Simorgh for Best Actress at the 20th Fajr Film Festival. She was the youngest person ever to win this award. She also set a record by being nominated three times in a row for Best Actress at the Fajr Film Festival for her first three movies.
Taraneh is known for choosing her roles carefully, especially in serious dramas. She has worked many times with Oscar-winning director Asghar Farhadi. This has made her one of the most respected actresses of her generation. She was the main actress in Farhadi's movie The Salesman, which won an Oscar in 2017.
She also played the main character in the popular Iranian online TV series Shahrzad for three seasons.
Personal Life
Taraneh Alidoosti's father, Hamid Alidoosti, was a famous football player for Iran's national team. He was the first Iranian player to play for a team outside of Iran. Later, he became a football coach. Her mother, Nadereh Hakim-Elahi, is an artist who creates sculptures.
Taraneh got married and had a daughter in 2013.
Speaking Out and Support
Speaking Out at the Academy Awards
On January 26, 2017, Taraneh Alidoosti announced that she would not attend the 89th Academy Awards. Her movie, The Salesman, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film that year. She chose to boycott the event to protest against new travel rules that the US government planned to put in place for people from Iran and other countries.
Speaking Out and Detention
On December 17, 2022, Iranian authorities detained Taraneh Alidoosti. This happened after she posted a message on Instagram. In her post, she spoke out about a government action that occurred during public protests in Iran. Her message said, "Your silence means the support of the oppression and the oppressor. His name was Mohsen Shekari. Every international organization who is watching this bloodshed and not taking action is a disgrace to humanity."
Support from Around the World
After her detention, many people from the international arts community showed their support. About 600 artists from 30 different countries signed an open letter asking for her release. Famous actors like Olivia Colman, Jessica Chastain, Cillian Murphy, Kristen Stewart, Dame Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Isabelle Huppert, Juliette Binoche, Ian McKellen, and Mark Ruffalo were among those who signed.
The Tribeca Festival and its co-founder, Robert De Niro, also asked for her immediate release. Major film festivals like the Cannes Film Festival, the Berlinale, and others also made statements demanding her freedom.
Release
Taraneh Alidoosti was released on January 4, 2023, after bail was posted.
