Tarraleah is a small, quiet place in the Central Highlands area of Tasmania. In 2016, a census showed that no one officially lived there.
In 2023, a big part of the town was bought by Hydro Tasmania for 11 million dollars.

Where is Tarraleah?
Tarraleah is in Tasmania. It is about 120 kilometers (75 miles) northwest of Hobart, the state capital. It is also close to Queenstown.
The Derwent River flows through the area. It forms part of the southern edge of Tarraleah. You can also find Lake Binney and the Tarraleah Power Station here.
A Look Back: Tarraleah's History
The name 'Tarraleah' comes from an Aboriginal word. It means 'brush kangaroo' or 'forester kangaroo.'
The town was built in the 1930s. It was created by the Hydro Electric Commission. This was a place for the people who worked on Tasmania's first hydroelectricity projects.
The power project and its main office in Tarraleah started in 1934. The local post office, first called Nive Road, changed its name to Tarraleah in 1935. Tarraleah was officially recognized as a locality in 1971.
Getting Around: Roads in Tarraleah
The main road, Route A10 (Lyell Highway), goes through Tarraleah. Another road, Route C601 (Fourteen Mile Road), starts from A10 and heads northwest.

Tarraleah is known for its beautiful alpine lakes and mountains. You can also see many hydro-electric dams, canals, and huge steel pipes.
Tarraleah is right on the Lyell Highway. It's a short drive from Lake King William and Bronte Lagoon. Lake Lipootah and Bradys Lake are also nearby.
The old Hydro construction village has been updated. It is now an estate called Tarraleah Lodge. Here you can find places to stay, fun activities, and restaurants.
Many outdoor activities are popular here. These include fresh water trout fishing, boating, bushwalking, mountain biking, and kayaking. Tarraleah also has a golf course high up in the mountains.
