Early Life and Music Journey
Tate Kobang grew up in Northeast Baltimore, Maryland. When he was a teenager, he moved to York, Pennsylvania. He went to Central York High School but later left to focus on his music career.
In 2013, something very sad happened: both his mother and father passed away within a few months. At just 21 years old, Tate became responsible for his eight younger brothers and sisters. This made him even more serious about music, as he wanted to provide for his family.
Musical Inspirations
Even though Tate Kobang first wanted to be a video game programmer, he loved music from a young age. He sang in his church choir when he was only five years old. He started writing his own music around age 11.
He also learned to read music and play the saxophone and piano in middle school. In high school, he took classes to learn about music production. His uncle, a Baltimore rapper named Killa Q, introduced him to rap music. Tate even wrote songs for his uncle. He also looks up to artists like Mr. Cheeks, Method Man, and Cassidy.
Music Career Highlights
The Rise of "Bank Rolls (Remix)"
On April 19, 2015, Tate Kobang released "Bank Rolls (Remix)". He released it on his late mother's birthday as a special song for his mixtape. This song was later featured in the video game Watch Dogs 2.
The song used parts of an older song called "Bank Roll" by Baltimore rapper Tim Trees. It also included a verse about Baltimore DJ K-Swift, who passed away in 2008. The day the song came out was also a difficult time for Baltimore. Tate released the song to bring some happiness and pride to the city. After the short 90-second video became very popular, Tate worked with the original song's producer, Rod Lee. They made the short track into a full-length song.
Joining 300 Entertainment
Soon after "Bank Rolls (Remix)" became popular, it caught the attention of 300 Entertainment. This record label was started by Lyor Cohen and Baltimore native Kevin Liles. At first, Tate was not sure about signing with them. But after learning more about the important people behind the label, he decided to consider it.
In July 2015, Tate Kobang went to New York City and signed a record deal with 300 Entertainment. In January 2016, he joined the label's "Young Hustle Tour." This tour visited 13 cities and featured other artists like Rich the Kid and T-Wayne.
Since We're Here Mixtape
