Taylor is a small town located in Cortland County, New York, United States. It is in the eastern part of the county, just east of the city of Cortland. In 2010, the town had a population of 523 people. Taylor was named after Zachary Taylor, who later became the 12th president of the United States.

The Story of Taylor
Taylor is part of an area once known as the Central New York Military Tract. The very first settlers arrived here around the year 1793.
How Taylor Became a Town
The town of Taylor was officially created in 1849. It was formed from a part of another town called Solon. By 1865, Taylor's population had grown to 1,167 people.
Historic Places in Taylor
Two important historical sites in Taylor are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Town Line Bridge and the Union Valley Congregational Church. These places help tell the story of the town's past.

Taylor covers a total area of about 78 square kilometers (30.1 square miles). Most of this area, about 77.7 square kilometers (30.0 square miles), is land. Only a small part, about 0.3 square kilometers (0.12 square miles), is water.

Places in Taylor
- Potter Hill – This is a community in the northeastern part of the town. It used to have a school, a cemetery, and several houses. Now, it is part of the Cuyler Hill State Forest.
- Solon Pond – A small lake located near the center of the town.
- Taylor – This is a small village, also known as a hamlet, in the southeastern corner of the town. It is located right on NY Route 26. In the past, it was called "East Solon," "Taylorville," and "Bangall."
- Taylor Center – Another hamlet located next to Solon Pond, near the town's center. It used to be called "Solon Pond" because of the nearby lake. The Taylor Center Methodist Episcopal Church and Taylor District No. 3 School was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
- Taylor Valley – This hamlet is located northwest of the Taylor hamlet and southwest of Taylor Center. It gets its name from a valley in the western part of the town.
- Union Valley (formerly "Dorantown") – A hamlet found in the northeastern part of the town.
Famous People from Taylor
- Gary Wood (1942–1994) – He was a professional NFL quarterback. He played for the New York Giants and the New Orleans Saints.
