Teague's History and Growth
Teague, Texas, began as a small community around the time of the American Civil War. It grew a lot in the late 1800s. The town was first called Brewer. In 1886, people living there said they had many businesses. These included a dry goods store, a grocery store, a blacksmith, and a barber. A cotton gin also opened that year.
The town grew quickly when the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway arrived in 1906. The railway built its workshops in Teague. The town was renamed Teague by Benjamin Franklin Yoakum. He was a railway leader. He named it after his mother, Narcissus Teague. Her parents were early settlers in Freestone County. Teague officially became a city in 1907.
In its early days, Teague was a busy railway center. It was also a place where local cotton farmers shipped their crops. By 1914, Teague had many services. These included churches, schools, banks, and newspapers. The population reached about 3,300 people.
However, the Great Depression in the 1930s caused problems. Many businesses closed, and the population went down. But since the mid-1980s, Teague's population has grown steadily. The town has changed with the times. For example, natural gas production became an important industry.
Teague also has a small airport. It is 3,300 feet long. People mostly use it for fun activities.

Teague's Location and Size
Teague is located in the western part of Freestone County. U.S. Route 84 goes through the northern side of the city. This road leads northeast about 10 miles to Fairfield. Fairfield is the county seat, which means it's where the county government is. The road also goes northwest about 13 miles to Mexia. Texas State Highway 179 (Main Street) goes east about 9 miles to Dew.
The city of Teague covers about 5.25 square miles (13.6 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. About 0.19 square miles (0.5 square kilometers) is water.
