Playing Football
Marchibroda played college football at Saint Bonaventure University and the University of Detroit. He was a great quarterback and led the country in passing yards in 1952.
In the 1953 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers picked Marchibroda as the fifth player overall. He was the first quarterback chosen that year. After one year, he joined the U.S. Army. He returned to the Steelers after his service. Marchibroda finished his playing career with the Chicago Cardinals in 1957.
Becoming a Coach
Marchibroda started his coaching career in 1961. He was an assistant coach for the Washington Redskins. Later, he joined the Los Angeles Rams in 1966. He then went back to the Redskins in 1971 as their offensive coordinator.
Coaching the Baltimore Colts
Marchibroda became a head coach for the first time with the Baltimore Colts in 1975. The team had a very bad record the year before. But Marchibroda helped them turn things around. The Colts won 10 games and lost 4 in 1975. They made it to the playoffs.
The Colts won the AFC East title for three years in a row. However, they lost in the divisional round of the playoffs each time. They lost to the Steelers in 1975 and 1976. In 1977, they lost to the Oakland Raiders.
Marchibroda almost left the Colts in 1976. He disagreed with the team owner about how players were treated. But the players and other coaches supported him. So, he returned to coach the team.
His time with the Baltimore Colts ended after the 1979 season. The team had a tough time with player contracts and injuries. Marchibroda was let go on December 27, 1979.
Later Coaching Roles
After leaving the Colts, Marchibroda worked as a coach for other teams. He was a quarterbacks coach for the Chicago Bears in 1981. He also served as an offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions (1982–1983) and the Philadelphia Eagles (1984–1985).
Marchibroda then joined the Buffalo Bills from 1987 to 1991. He was their quarterbacks coach and later their offensive coordinator. He helped develop the "K-Gun" offense. This was a fast-paced offense where quarterback Jim Kelly would quickly call plays. This made it hard for the other team to make changes.
Coaching the Indianapolis Colts
Marchibroda returned to coach the Colts in 1992. The team had moved to Indianapolis and had a very bad record the year before. Marchibroda helped them improve a lot, leading them to a 9–7 record in 1992.
In 1995, the Colts made a great playoff run. They almost reached the Super Bowl XXX, but they lost a close game to the Steelers. Even with this success, Marchibroda left the Colts in 1996.
Coaching the Baltimore Ravens
Just a few days later, Marchibroda became the first head coach of the new Baltimore Ravens team in 1996. He coached the Ravens for three seasons. After the 1998 season, he left the team.
After Coaching
From 1999 to 2006, Marchibroda worked as a radio commentator for the Indianapolis Colts. He shared his knowledge of the game with fans.
