Teddy's Athletic Journey
Starting Out: 2007–2009
Teddy Tamgho was born in Paris, France. He became interested in athletics when he was a young boy. He started competing in triple jump for the Dynamic Aulnay Club at age 13.
His first international competition was the 2007 European Athletics Junior Championships. He finished fourth, just missing a medal. But he set a new personal best jump of 16.35 meters. Later that year, he set a new national junior record of 16.53 meters.
In 2008, Teddy won his first French National Indoor Championships title. His jump of 16.94 meters made him the second-best junior triple jumper indoors ever. He said his speed was his strong point. He also thanked his coach and training partners for his success.
Teddy jumped 17.33 meters to win gold at the 2008 World Junior Championships. This was a great jump, but the wind was a little too strong for it to count as an official record. He was the only athlete to jump over 17 meters in that final.
In 2009, Teddy kept getting better. He set a new under-23 world record indoors with a jump of 17.58 meters. This was almost the French national indoor record. He then won his second national indoor triple jump title. However, he was injured and didn't do well at the 2009 European Athletics Indoor Championships.
Later in 2009, he won his first French National Outdoor Championships title. His jump of 17.11 meters was his best that year. This qualified him for the 2009 World Championships. He made it to the final but finished eleventh.
Winning Gold and Setting Records: 2010–2013
In 2010, Teddy focused on big international events. At the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships, he set a new world indoor record! He jumped 17.90 meters on his very last try. This broke a 17-year-old national record. He said he had grown stronger and learned to compete more calmly.
Teddy's great performance continued outdoors in 2010. He set a new French national record of 17.63 meters. Then, at an event in New York City, he jumped an amazing 17.98 meters! This made him the third-best outdoor triple jumper of all time. He was just 20 years old.
He won his second French National Outdoor Championships title. He also won bronze at the 2010 European Athletics Championships. He was named the "European Athletics Rising Star of the Year" for his amazing year. He then started working with a new coach, Iván Pedroso.
In 2011, Teddy broke his own world indoor record again! He jumped 17.91 meters to win the French National Indoor Championships. Then, at the 2011 European Indoor Championships in Paris, he jumped 17.92 meters twice. This set another new world indoor record and earned him the gold medal in front of his home crowd.
Later in 2011, Teddy fractured his right ankle while warming up for a competition. This injury meant he had to miss the 2011 World Championships and the rest of the year. He had surgery on his ankle.
In December 2011, Teddy faced a suspension from competition. This was due to an incident at a training camp. He missed the 2012 World Indoor Championships but was still allowed to compete in the 2012 Olympics. However, he had another ankle operation in June 2012. This forced him to miss the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
Teddy returned to competition in May 2013 after being away for 22 months. He had skipped the indoor season to get ready for the 2013 World Championships in Moscow. At the World Championships, he won the gold medal with a jump of 18.04 meters! This made him only the third man in history to jump 18 meters or more outdoors. He became the first French male triple jump medalist at the World Championships.
After this big win, Teddy fractured his left leg during training in November 2013. He had surgery and announced he would miss all of 2014 to recover fully. He said he wanted to be 100% ready before competing again. In December 2013, he was chosen as the French male athlete of the year.
Later Career: 2014–2015
In June 2014, Teddy faced another suspension. This was because he missed some required check-ins for athletic rules. The suspension lasted until March 2015.
In March 2015, Teddy returned to competition after 18 months. He jumped 16.78 meters. However, in May 2015, he injured his Achilles tendon during a competition. This injury meant he had to miss the 2015 World Championships.
