Tendring is a small village in Essex, England. It is also a civil parish, which is a local area with its own council. The village is so important that a larger area, the Tendring District, is named after it. Long ago, a historical area called the Tendring Hundred also took its name from this village.

Tendring was chosen for these names because it was located in the middle of the area. It wasn't because it was the biggest settlement. In 2011, about 736 people lived in the village parish. The larger Tendring District had a population of 138,048 people. The village stretches out along the B1035 road, connecting Manningtree to Thorpe-le-Soken.

The Tendring parish includes smaller areas like Goose Green, Tendring Green, and Tendring Heath. The village church is named after Saint Edmund.

Getting Around Tendring

The village is located on the B1035 road. It is also very close to the larger A120 road. This makes it easy to travel to and from Tendring.

You can catch bus services from Tendring to nearby towns. These include Clacton-on-Sea and Colchester.

Village History and Buildings

Tendring has some interesting history, especially with its old buildings.

The Workhouse at Tendring Heath

A long time ago, there was a building called the Tendring Union Workhouse at Tendring Heath. Workhouses were places where poor people could live and work. They were built to help people who had no other support.

In 1948, the workhouse was changed. It became a hospital for older people, run by the National Health Service (NHS). This hospital helped many people for decades. It finally closed down in the 1980s.
