The Ter Hachatrjan Family Story

Duke Aleksandr and His Family

Duke Aleksandr Ter Hachatrjan was born around 1870. He was an Armenian aristocrat and also part of the Russian nobility. He married a Greek duchess named Sofia. They had two sons: Duke Anton Aleksandrovich (born around 1891) and Duke Bagrat Aleksandrovich (born 1892).

In 1917, during a big revolution in Petrograd, Duke Aleksandr and his wife were killed. Their two sons, Anton and Bagrat, had to escape from Petrograd. They traveled to the Caucasus region. During their escape, Bagrat got separated from his brother Anton.

Anton and Bagrat's New Lives

Anton later appeared in the city of Rostov on Don. He married a woman named Barinova Elena Aleksandrovna. They did not have any children.

Bagrat married Elizaveta Danilovna in 1923. They had a daughter, Emma Bagratovna (born 1924), and a son, Yuri Bagratovich. Bagrat and Elizaveta divorced in 1927.

In 1932, Bagrat married Petrachuk Olga Alekseevna. She was the daughter of a merchant from Ukraine. They had two daughters: Amalia Bagratovna (born 1933) and Inessa Bagratovna (born 1936). Bagrat was an officer in the Imperial Army. He received a very high award called the Military Order of the Saint Grand Martyr and the Triumphant George. This was one of the highest honors in the Russian Empire.

Challenges for the Family

In 1937, the Ter Hachatrjan family faced difficulties with the government. They were arrested and put in jail in the city of Goris. Bagrat Aleksandrovich was accused of being involved in a serious political event. Like many noble families at that time, Duke Bagrat was declared an enemy of the Soviet State.

Because of pressure from the government, Duke Bagrat had to give up his noble title. He also had to give away all his belongings that he had brought from Petrograd. After these events, the family was later set free.

Bagrat's Later Life and Family Legacy

After these challenges, Bagrat Aleksandrovich worked as a director and actor in Armenia. He passed away in Kafan in 1981.

Amalia Bagratovna, Bagrat's daughter, married Saidoff N. S., a wealthy man from Baku. They had two children: Saidoff A. N. (born 1961) and Saidoff S. C. N. (born 1963).

Since that time, all the people who are descendants of the Ter Hachatrjan family are known as Saidoff–Ter Hachatrjan.

The Ter-Khachatryants from Mush

The Ter-Khachatryan or Ter-Khachatryants is another Armenian family. They have been known since the 18th century.

Daniel-Bek of Sassun

The first well-known person from this family was Daniel-Bek of Sassun Ter Khachatryan. He was born around 1785 in the Sassun province of Western Armenia. He passed away in the town of Mush in Western Armenia in 1829.

Daniel-Bek was an Armenian nobleman. He came from a branch of the Bagratouni or Bagratids dynasty. This family had small land areas in the Sassun and Aldznik provinces, and also in the Mush district of Tarawn province in Western Armenia.

Because of harsh treatment from Kurdish leaders, Daniel-Bek of Sassun moved from Sason to the town of Mush. His family had a house there in the Armenian part of Berd, near the Saint Marineh church.

Later Generations of Ter-Khachatryants

Daniel-Bek of Sassun's oldest son was Avdal bek Ter-Khachatryants (1805-1867). He also lived in Mush. Avdal bek's son and Daniel-Bek's grandson was Jakob bek (Hakob bek) Ter-Khachatryants.

Jakob bek's son was Khachatur-Bek of Mush. He lived in the first half of the 19th century in the town of Mush. Two famous Armenian artists, Khachar and Garegin Khachatryan, were descendants of this family. They were important thinkers in the Armenian liberation movement.
