Thalia's Early Life and Sacrifice
Thalia Grace is the daughter of Zeus, one of the three most powerful Greek Gods. The other two are Poseidon and Hades. When Thalia was ten years old, she ran away from home. A satyr named Grover Underwood was sent to protect her. Two years later, she was trying to reach Camp Half-Blood. This is a safe place for demigods.
Meeting Friends and Facing Danger
On her journey, Thalia met two other young demigods. They were Annabeth Chase and Luke Castellan. Together, they traveled and faced many dangers. They even met the Hunters of Artemis, a group of immortal girls who serve the goddess Artemis.
When Thalia was twelve, a group of monsters attacked them. They were caught by a Cyclops in New York City. Annabeth helped them escape. However, the monsters quickly caught up. As they reached Half-Blood Hill, the entrance to Camp Half-Blood, Thalia made a brave choice. She told Luke, Grover, and Annabeth to cross the camp's magical border. Thalia stayed behind to fight the monsters alone.
Becoming a Pine Tree
Thalia sacrificed her life to save her friends. But her father, Zeus, felt sad for her. He used his power to turn her into a tall pine tree. This tree still stands on Half-Blood Hill. It helps protect Camp Half-Blood from monsters.
Thalia's Personality and Style
Thalia is a very skilled fighter. She once said she could always beat Luke in a battle. She has a punk rock style and loves rock bands like Green Day. She also dislikes Barbie dolls.
Annabeth once told Percy that he and Thalia are very similar. She said, "You guys are so alike it's scary." Thalia wants to be strong, but she can also be very sensitive. She sees Chiron, the camp director, like a father. She sometimes feels that her own father, Zeus, does not care about her. Thalia also really likes cheeseburgers!
Thalia's Adventures in the Books
The Lightning Thief
In this first book, Thalia is mentioned as the pine tree that protects Camp Half-Blood. She risked her life to save her friends. She also appeared in one of Percy's dreams.
The Sea of Monsters
Thalia appears in Percy's dreams throughout this book. At the end of the story, something amazing happens. The magical Golden Fleece is placed on her pine tree. This powerful item brings Thalia back to life!
After she returns, Zeus gives her a special spear. It shoots electricity and can shrink to fit in her pocket. Athena, another goddess, gives her a bracelet. This bracelet turns into Aegis, a shield with Medusa's head on it. It is a copy of Zeus's own shield.
The Titan's Curse
Thalia and Percy sometimes argue at camp. They have similar personalities, which can cause them to clash. Percy calls her "Pinecone Face." Thalia calls him "Seaweed Brain," which is Annabeth's nickname for Percy.
Thalia joins a quest to find the goddess Artemis. She also helps hunt a dangerous sea monster called the Ophiotaurus. The group also wants to rescue Annabeth. Percy, Zoë Nightshade, Bianca di Angelo, and Grover are also on this quest.
They face many dangers, including a metal giant. Bianca di Angelo dies trying to control the giant. Later, they fight the Titan General, Atlas, and his army. Zoë Nightshade is badly hurt by Atlas and dies.
Thalia also fights her old friend Luke. She seems to have strong feelings for him. They discover that Kronos, the main enemy, wanted to use Thalia. She was going to turn sixteen soon. This would make her the child of a big prophecy.
To avoid this dangerous path, Thalia makes a big choice. She joins her half-sister, Artemis, and becomes a Hunter. Hunters of Artemis are immortal unless they die in battle or fall in love. This choice stops her from turning sixteen and becoming part of the prophecy.
Thalia's tree still stands on Half-Blood Hill. The Golden Fleece keeps it strong. A baby dragon named Peleus guards it.
The Battle of the Labyrinth
Thalia is not at Camp Half-Blood during this summer. She is away on adventures with Artemis and the Hunters. Percy mentions her once when talking to Hera, the goddess of marriage.
The Last Olympian
Thalia and the Hunters of Artemis arrive to help Percy. They defend the Lincoln Tunnel against the Titans. Thalia helps Percy and the other demigods protect Manhattan. At the end of the story, Thalia is still alive. She gets help to find more Hunters, as many died in the battle.
Thalia's Role in The Heroes of Olympus
The Lost Hero
Thalia appears with the Hunters at a cave near Aeolus's palace. She also helps fight monsters at the wolf house. The Hunters join Leo, Jason, and Piper in this battle.
The Son of Neptune
Thalia is mentioned in this book. Percy has a dream that shows a flashback from The Titan's Curse. In the dream, Thalia, Percy, and Zoë Nightshade are fighting Atlas and Luke on Mount Tam. They are trying to save Annabeth and Artemis.
The Blood of Olympus
Thalia and the Hunters meet Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano in San Juan. They take her to her sister, Hylla Ramírez-Arellano. Thalia explains that the Hunters and Amazons have been fighting monsters. Meanwhile, the demigods have been fighting each other.
A monster named Orion attacks their stronghold. Many Hunters and Amazons are killed. Thalia and Hylla survive. When Nico and Hedge arrive, Thalia protects them. She helps them and Reyna escape by shadow traveling. Thalia survives this battle.
Thalia's Role in The Trials of Apollo
The Dark Prophecy
Thalia and the Hunters are nearby when Apollo calls for help. They arrive with Leo and Festus to help rescue someone. Thalia rides with Apollo to help them escape.
After they flee, Thalia offers Apollo Moonwater to help him regain his strength. She tells him that Artemis, her half-sister, was forbidden by Zeus from helping Apollo directly. However, Artemis still ordered the Hunters to help him. They all head back to the Waystation.
Thalia and Apollo ride into the Waystation. Thalia stops her Hunters from possibly hurting Lityerses. She then helps rally everyone for battle and asks for more arrows.
During the battle, Thalia stands with others as Commodus holds Emmie, Leo, and Georgie hostage. Apollo asks her to stand down before he uses his god powers to blind the emperor. Thalia takes out one of Commodus's guards. She searches for Commodus but cannot find him. Afterward, she discusses a new prophecy with everyone. She says the Hunters cannot help with this new mission because they have their own task to finish.
Before she and the Hunters leave, Thalia asks Apollo to say hello to Jason and Piper. Apollo asks her to say hi to Artemis for him, and Thalia agrees.
Thalia's Weaknesses
Thalia has a hard time saying no when offered power. She also has a fear of heights. This is strange because her father is Zeus, the Lord of the Sky. She is also very determined. She finds it hard to give up on a difficult task once she has started it.
Thalia's Powers and Abilities
Natural Skills
- Thalia has ADHD. This helps her be more aware and react quickly in fights.
- Like other demigods, Thalia is dyslexic. Her brain is "wired" to understand Ancient Greek better.
- When Thalia becomes a Hunter of Artemis, she becomes immortal. This means she will not age. She can only die if she is killed in battle or breaks her promise to Artemis. This promise is to never fall in love.
- Thalia can "manipulate the Mist." This means she can make things appear differently to humans. Chiron taught her this skill.
- Thalia is a very good fighter. She is able to beat Luke in a fight.
Powers from Zeus
- As the daughter of Zeus, Thalia is very powerful. She is as strong as Percy and Nico, who are also children of the Big Three gods.
- Thalia can send strong electric shocks through someone's body just by touching them.
- Things connected to her father's power can obey her. For example, statues of angels, which were gifts to Zeus, flew her and her friends to San Francisco when she asked.
- Thalia is a strong leader. This is likely because her father is Zeus, the king of the gods.
- Thalia can control electricity and lightning. This is because Zeus, the god of lightning, is her father.
- Thalia has some control over air and the sky. This is also because she is the daughter of Zeus, the Lord of the Sky. She has not fully tested these powers because she has a fear of heights.
Thalia's Weapons
- Aegis: This is a copy of Zeus's shield. It expands from a metal bracelet she wears. Many campers and monsters are scared of it.
- Collapsible Spear: This spear expands from a small Mace canister. It can shoot electricity.
