Annabeth Chase is a fictional character from Rick Riordan's popular Percy Jackson and Hereos of Olympus book series. She is a demigod, which means she is half-human and half-goddess. Her father is a mortal man named Frederick Chase. Her mother is Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, crafts, arts, and battle strategy. Annabeth is also first cousins with Magnus Chase. He is a character from another series by Rick Riordan.

Annabeth first appears in the very first book of the series, The Lightning Thief. As the stories continue, she becomes very close friends with Percy Jackson. Later, they become a couple. Annabeth is known as the architect of Olympus. She is also one of the main leaders at Camp Half-Blood. This is a special camp for demigods like her.

The actress Alexandra Daddario plays Annabeth in the movies. These movies are based on the books. She appeared in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Percy Jackson: The Sea of Monsters.

Character Development

Rick Riordan, the author of the books, once talked about Annabeth. He was asked if characters like Annabeth are heroes in their own way. Riordan said that Annabeth is Percy's "rational side." This means she is good at thinking things through. She can find solutions and options that Percy might miss. This is especially true when Percy is in a panic during a battle.

Annabeth's ability to think clearly, even in tough situations, is a key part of her character. It also shows why she is a daughter of Athena. Athena is the goddess of wisdom and battle strategy. Annabeth truly embodies these traits.

Annabeth's Story

Annabeth Chase is the demigod daughter of the goddess Athena and a mortal man, Frederick Chase. She was born on July 12, 1993. As a daughter of Athena, who is a virgin goddess, Annabeth was not born in the usual way. She was a "brain child," a gift from her mother to a man Athena cared for.

When Annabeth was seven, she ran away from home. On her journey, she met Luke Castellan, Thalia Grace, and Grover Underwood. Together, they traveled to Camp Half-Blood. They had to fight many monsters along the way. When they reached the camp's borders, Thalia bravely fought the monsters alone. This allowed Luke, Grover, and Annabeth to get safely into camp. Thalia's father, Zeus, then turned her into a pine tree. This tree is now known as Thalia's Pine Tree. Annabeth lived at Camp Half-Blood for five years before Percy Jackson arrived.

Annabeth did not get along well with her father and step-family. She felt her father saw her as a problem. Her step-siblings seemed to be afraid of her. Her stepmother worried that Annabeth, being a demigod, put the family in danger. At the end of The Lightning Thief, Annabeth went back to live with her family. She stayed with them for about a year. In The Titan's Curse, her father and stepmother showed that they cared for her deeply. Her father even helped fight Kronos's army to save Annabeth.

Annabeth is a skilled fighter. She can also think quickly in difficult situations. Despite this, Annabeth dreams of becoming an architect. She wants to design and build amazing structures. In The Lightning Thief, she loved a 3-D building game at the Lotus Hotel and Casino. In The Sea of Monsters, her biggest dream was to redesign the whole world. She also wanted to help Luke become good again. And she wanted her mother and father to accept her fully. In The Last Olympian, she finally became the official architect of Olympus.

Annabeth's biggest weakness is Hubris, or deadly pride. She sometimes believes she can do anything. This includes getting her parents back together or saving Luke. She even thinks she can make the world better than the gods did. She also has a deep fear of spiders, called arachnophobia. This fear comes from the ancient Greek story of Athena and Arachne.

Annabeth is described as athletic. She has curly blond hair, like a princess. She has tan skin and stormy gray eyes. Percy Jackson first thought she was "cute." Later, he described her as "seriously beautiful."

Annabeth in the Books

The Lightning Thief

Annabeth first appears in The Lightning Thief. She is twelve years old. Percy gives her the nickname "Wise Girl." It started as an insult but became a friendly nickname.

She meets Percy Jackson after he is attacked by the Minotaur and arrives at Camp Half-Blood. Percy first sees her as "pretty" with blond hair. Annabeth wants to go on Percy's quest. She believes he is "the one" from the Great Prophecy. Annabeth, Percy, and Grover go to find Zeus's stolen lightning bolt. In this book, Annabeth shows her amazing intelligence. This comes from her mother, Athena. She also shows her arachnophobia (fear of spiders). This is a common fear for all of Athena's children.

The Sea of Monsters

Annabeth, Percy, and Tyson are not allowed to go on the quest for the Golden Fleece. This quest is meant to save Thalia's Pine Tree and find Grover. But they sneak out of Camp Half-Blood to go anyway. In this book, Annabeth's biggest dream is revealed. She wants to redesign the world, save Luke, and be accepted by her parents.

They get stuck on the island of the Queen-Witch Circe. Annabeth saves Percy after he is turned into a guinea pig. She uses special multivitamins given to them by Hermes. During a fight with Polyphemus, Annabeth uses her invisible Yankee's Cap. She pretends to be "Nobody" and distracts him. This gives Percy enough time to defeat the monster. Annabeth is badly hurt in the fight. But she is healed by the Golden Fleece.

The Titan's Curse

Annabeth is kidnapped along with the goddess Artemis. Percy, Thalia, Grover, and the huntresses Zoë Nightshade and Bianca di Angelo must save them. Percy has a dream where Annabeth is on a mountain. She sees Luke holding up the sky. Annabeth helps him hold it. Then Luke slips away, leaving Annabeth to hold it alone. This dream is later used to trick Artemis into holding the sky.

Annabeth's role is smaller in this book. But it hints at a future friendship between her and Percy. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, also makes Percy think about his feelings for Annabeth. In the end, Percy saves both Annabeth and Artemis. Thalia fights Luke, and he falls off a cliff.

The Battle of the Labyrinth

Annabeth is fourteen in this book. Percy and Annabeth find an entrance to the Labyrinth. She realizes Luke might use this entrance to attack Camp Half-Blood.

Annabeth leads the quest into the Labyrinth. This fulfills one of her goals. She enters the Labyrinth with Percy, Grover, and Tyson. They want to stop Kronos's forces from entering Camp Half-Blood. They search for the Labyrinth's inventor, Daedalus. The Oracle gave Annabeth a prophecy that scared her. She refused to say the last line. They face many challenges in the Labyrinth. Annabeth meets a Sphinx. She finds its riddles too easy and insulting to her intelligence. They escape the Sphinx and continue their search. They want to find Hephaestus to learn about Daedalus.

They head to Hephaestus's forge in Mount St. Helens. They find telekhines there making a weapon for Kronos. Percy tells Annabeth to escape. She gives him a kiss for good luck, and they separate. Annabeth believes Percy dies when Mount St. Helens erupts. But he falls onto the island Ogygia, where the nymph Calypso lives. When Percy returns to camp, Annabeth is holding a funeral for him. When she sees him, she hugs him tightly. But she becomes very jealous when she learns about Calypso. Percy then asks a mortal girl, Rachel Elizabeth Dare, to help them in the Labyrinth. Rachel can see through the Mist, which hides magical things. Annabeth becomes jealous of how close Percy and Rachel get. The three of them discover Luke, who has become Kronos's host. After a battle, Luke is forced back into the Labyrinth. Annabeth refuses to believe Luke is entirely bad. She gets upset with Percy for saying otherwise.

After their mission, Annabeth and Percy are on Half-Blood Hill. They compare their goals with the prophecy. Annabeth finally reveals the last line of her prophecy: "To lose a love to worse than death." She is confused about her feelings for Luke and her growing feelings for Percy. At the end, she leaves with her dad to go to a private school.

The Last Olympian

In the final book, Annabeth first appears when Percy returns. He has just blown up Kronos's ship, the Princess Andromeda. Annabeth helps Percy hear the Great Prophecy. Percy bathes in the River Styx. He barely escapes by imagining Annabeth pulling him out of the river. He calls Annabeth and tells her to meet him at the Empire State Building. All the demigods from Camp Half-Blood join them.

When Annabeth and Percy go to Olympus, they meet Hermes. Annabeth tries to apologize to Hermes about Luke becoming Kronos. Hermes gets angry and blames her for not saving Luke. Hermes leaves, and they return to the other campers. They must defend Manhattan and Mount Olympus. In battle, Ethan Nakamura tries to stab Percy in his weak spot, his Achilles spot. Annabeth jumps in front of him and takes the knife. After resting for a few hours, Annabeth, though still weak, returns to battle.

Kronos goes to Olympus. Grover, Thalia, Percy, and Annabeth follow him. Kronos attacks Percy. Annabeth joins the fight but is knocked out when Kronos slams her into Athena's throne. In the end, she saves Percy and Olympus. She finally understands the prophecy's true meaning. She convinces Percy to give Luke her knife. Luke had given it to her when she was seven. Luke uses it to stab himself, sending Kronos back to Tartarus. The gods reward Annabeth. They allow her to use her skills as an architect to rebuild Mount Olympus. Percy Jackson refuses immortality because of his feelings for Annabeth. At Camp Half-Blood, Annabeth kisses Percy after he shares his feelings for her. She warns him that she will never make things easy for him. After this, they share another kiss underwater.

Magnus Chase And The Gods Of Asgard

The Sword of Summer

Annabeth appears in this book. She is searching for her cousin Magnus with her dad.

The Hammer of Thor

Percy appears at the end of this book. Magnus Chase learns he needs to go to a place called the "Ship of Dead." He asks Annabeth for advice. Annabeth tells him, "I don't know much about the sea, but my boyfriend does. It's time you met Percy..."

The Ship of Dead

The first chapter of this book is called "Percy Jackson Does His Level Best to Kill Me." Annabeth and Percy give Magnus tips about the sea. They get a bit frustrated because Magnus struggles with everything related to the ocean. He almost gets himself killed.

Annabeth in the Movie

In the movie, Alexandra Daddario plays Annabeth. She is shown as a warrior at Camp Half-Blood with Percy. She is also a potential romantic interest. In the movie trailer, Annabeth tells Percy, "I definitely have strong feelings for you. I just haven't decided if they are positive or negative yet." Another scene shows them leaning in, as if to kiss. But it was a trick. She suddenly takes Percy's sword from his sheath. She then puts her own sword to his throat and says, "First rule of battle strategy, never let your opponent distract you."

In the movie, Annabeth has brown, straight hair. This is different from the book's description of her curly blond hair. She also has blue eyes in the movie, not gray. She does not show much affection towards Luke in the movie.

Friendships and Relationships

A key part of the series is the relationships Annabeth has with Percy and Luke. Luke is Annabeth's hero. He was one of her first demigod friends. Annabeth cares for Percy, and she hints at her feelings for him. But she also has lingering feelings for Luke. At the end of The Last Olympian, Luke shows some care for her, like an older brother. This is true even though Luke and Percy are rivals. Luke has tried to harm Percy many times. In The Sea of Monsters, one of Annabeth's wishes is to save Luke from Kronos.

In the beginning of The Lightning Thief, Annabeth seems to dislike Percy. She thinks he is weak. She is also influenced by the rivalry between her mother, Athena, and Percy's father, Poseidon. But during their quest, they ride a truck together. This is the first time they truly talk. In The Mark of Athena, Annabeth says that's when she chose to "like" him. At the very end of The Sea of Monsters, Annabeth gives Percy a friendly kiss on the cheek after they win a chariot race.

In The Titan's Curse, there are hints of a deeper connection between Annabeth and Percy. But this is complicated by her feelings for Luke. Also, her mother, Athena, does not approve of her friendship with Percy. In The Battle of the Labyrinth, Annabeth finally shows her feelings for Percy. She kisses him for good luck before using her Yankee's cap to turn invisible. When Percy returns, she is very jealous. She knows he has been with Calypso. It is suggested that Percy tries to tell Annabeth his feelings. But Annabeth remains distant, still thinking about Luke.

In The Last Olympian, after Kronos is defeated and Luke's spirit is saved, Percy and Annabeth's relationship becomes stronger. Annabeth also tells Percy he looks "cute when he's worried." This is when he checks on her after she took a knife meant for him. Annabeth tells Luke as he dies that she always saw him as a brother, but never loved him romantically. Later, she and Percy share a kiss. She tells him she will never make things easy for him. He describes it as if his brain felt like it was melting. But other campers see them and throw them into the camp lake. Then they share another kiss underwater in an air bubble Percy makes. They are together at the end of the series. It is hinted that they might get married one day. Annabeth said she wanted "to build something permanent." Percy said maybe they were "getting a good start together."
