Title The Oracle

Rachel Elizabeth Dare is a character with red hair from Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson & the Olympians book series. Unlike many other main characters, her parents are both regular humans, not gods. Even so, Rachel has a special gift: she can see through the Mist. The Mist is a magical veil that hides the world of gods and monsters from most humans.

Rachel also has the rare power to predict the future. Because of these special abilities, she becomes the new Oracle of Delphi. This means she is the Oracle of the Gods and the main Oracle at Camp Half-Blood. By taking on this important role, Rachel gives up her chance to be in a romantic relationship with Percy. This is because the Oracle must remain unmarried.

Rachel's Story

First Appearance in The Titan's Curse

Rachel first shows up in the book The Titan's Curse. She meets Percy at the Hoover Dam. Percy is being chased by skeleton warriors called Spartoi. Rachel accidentally sneezes, and Percy turns around. His sword, Riptide, passes right through her. Percy quickly realizes that Rachel knows it's a sword and can see through the Mist. She helps Percy escape the skeletons by sending him into a restroom and the skeletons into an electricity room.

Adventures in The Battle of the Labyrinth

In The Battle of the Labyrinth, we learn more about Rachel's life. She appears at Percy's new school, Goode High School. She can tell that two cheerleaders are actually dangerous monsters called empousai. Rachel helps Percy get away from one of them named Kelli.

Later, Percy asks Rachel to help him find his way through Daedalus's Labyrinth. This is a huge, confusing maze. Rachel joins Percy and Annabeth on their journey through the maze. They discover that Daedalus has made a deal with Kronos, the evil Titan lord. Rachel escapes with Percy and Annabeth.

Eventually, the three find Kronos's main base. Kronos has taken over Luke Castellan's body. He tries to capture Percy. Rachel, along with Annabeth and Nico di Angelo, appears and throws her blue plastic hairbrush at Luke's eye. This surprises Kronos and allows Percy to escape. Rachel also helps find Pan, the lost god of nature. She is there when he passes away.

After their adventures, Rachel leaves Percy, Annabeth, Nico, Grover Underwood, and Tyson. Before she goes, she shares that her father is a very rich businessman. He buys forests and cuts them down to build shopping malls. Pan's death affects Rachel deeply, especially because of her father's work. She wants to spend more time with Percy. Annabeth is not happy about this. Percy promises to call Rachel and says he has memorized her phone number. Rachel is pleased by this.

Rachel and Percy become good friends in The Battle of the Labyrinth. Annabeth becomes a bit jealous of Rachel. Rachel also notices that Percy and Annabeth have strong feelings for each other, even if they don't admit it.

Becoming the Oracle in The Last Olympian

The Last Olympian starts with Percy driving Rachel to the beach in Paul Blofis's car. She asks Percy to join her parents and her on a trip to St. Thomas. Percy politely says no. They are interrupted by Percy's pegasus, Blackjack, who lands on the car with Charles Beckendorf riding him.

Percy is about to go on a dangerous mission to sink the Princess Andromeda, a ship Kronos is using as his base. Rachel kisses him for good luck before he leaves. In Percy's dreams, he sees Rachel writing in Ancient Greek. She is also drawing pictures of things she has never seen before, like a young Luke Castellan.

When Rachel goes on vacation with her parents, she convinces them to return to New York. She makes a deal with her father to attend Clarion Academy. This is a special school for girls that her mother also went to. Rachel felt that Percy was in danger, which is why she wanted to return. Later, Rachel flies to Camp Half-Blood on Blackjack. She takes in the spirit of the Oracle after Hades lifts a curse on it. She then speaks the next Great Prophecy. Rachel returns to the human world for the school year, leaving the campers without their Oracle until the next summer.

Rachel's Personality

Rachel's father is very rich, but she doesn't like her family's fancy lifestyle. She prefers to help others through charity. She also loves art. She has drawn many realistic pictures of things from the past and future. Sometimes these are things she could not have possibly seen, like a 9-year-old Luke Castellan.

Rachel was interested in Percy, which caused some tension between her and Annabeth. However, Rachel later explains that she was drawn to Percy because he was the one who led her to her true path as the Oracle. As the Oracle, she cannot fall in love or have children. She respects the relationship between Annabeth and Percy.
