Tyson is the half-brother of Percy Jackson, the main hero of the stories. They both share the same father, the powerful Greek god Poseidon. Tyson first appears in the second book, The Sea of Monsters, where he is living on the streets.

Tyson was played by Douglas Smith in the movie Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.

About Tyson

Tyson is the son of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, and a nature spirit. He is a young cyclops who always tries his best. He wants to make his family proud. Tyson first meets Percy at a school called Meriwether College Prep. Most people at the school don't realize Tyson has only one eye. This is because of something called the Mist. The Mist makes mortals see things differently. Tyson has scars on his back from a sphinx where he used to live. He thinks Annabeth Chase is very pretty.

Tyson is very strong. He is also good at working with metal. He uses these skills to help his friends. For example, he is immune to fire. This helps him fight monsters that use fire. During his first summer at Camp Half-Blood, Tyson made Percy a special shield. It showed all their adventures. The shield could also shrink into a watch.

Tyson's Adventures in the Books

In The Sea of Monsters

In this book, a magical tree at Camp Half-Blood gets poisoned. This tree protects the camp. The only way to save it is to find the Golden Fleece. The Fleece has amazing healing powers. It is located on Polyphemus's Island. This island is in the Sea of Monsters, which is like the Bermuda Triangle.

Clarisse La Rue, a daughter of Ares, is chosen for the quest. But Percy and Annabeth decide to go too. They want to find their friend Grover. Grover is trapped in Polyphemus's cave. Tyson joins Percy and Annabeth on their journey. They first save Camp Half-Blood from two fire-breathing bulls. Then, they set off to find Polyphemus. Polyphemus thinks Grover is a female cyclops.

On their way, they face dangers like Scylla and Charybdis. Clarisse's ship is destroyed. Tyson is thought to be lost. But he is saved by a friendly hippocampus named Rainbow. They all meet up on Polyphemus's Island. Together, they manage to get the Golden Fleece.

After they return, Luke kidnaps Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson. Luke tries to hurt Percy. But Percy reveals that Chiron is innocent. Chiron comes to rescue them with his relatives, the Party Ponies. The Golden Fleece is placed on the tree. This brings the tree, and Thalia, back to life.

In The Titan's Curse

Tyson has a smaller part in this book. He is working in Poseidon's underwater palace. He makes different items at the forge. He appears briefly in a message to Percy.

In The Battle of the Labyrinth

Percy returns to Camp Half-Blood to find Tyson already there. Tyson has cleaned their room. He also fixed Percy's shield. A monster called a manticore had broken it. The shield still shrinks into a watch.

Annabeth Chase leads a quest into Daedalus' Labyrinth. She takes Percy, Grover, and Tyson with her. They want to stop Kronos's evil forces. They hope to find Daedalus, the maze's creator. They face many challenges inside the Labyrinth. Annabeth solves riddles from a Sphinx. They find Hephaestus for help. Tyson finds Briares, the Hundred-Handed One. But Briares is scared and won't fight. The group splits up. Tyson goes with Grover to find Pan. They all reunite later. With help from Daedalus, they escape the Labyrinth.

In The Last Olympian

Percy jumps off a ship that explodes. He finds himself in Poseidon's palace. Tyson is waiting for him there. Percy is not doing well. Tyson takes him to Poseidon. Poseidon looks very tired from the war. He doesn't want Tyson to fight. He sends Tyson back to the armory to make weapons.

Later, Tyson is seen through a magical mist. Percy suggests that Tyson and other Cyclopes fight Typhon. They succeed, and Typhon falls into the Hudson River. Tyson is last seen on Mount Olympus. He gets a new "stick" as a reward. He is also made a general of Olympus's army.
