Saving Gotham: The Story Unfolds
The Joker and the Penguin escape from Arkham Asylum. They both want to find some stolen money hidden in a crypt. This crypt is in Gotham Cemetery. Batman quickly stops the Joker. The Joker falls into a river and gets shocked.
The Penguin goes into the cemetery. He uses his umbrella-sword to open a coffin. He hopes to find the money inside. Instead, he finds a body. He accidentally cuts his hand. His blood drips onto the body's heart. This brings the body back to life! It is Dracula, the vampire king. Dracula's body was moved to Gotham City after he "died."
Dracula does not bite the Penguin. A watchman comes by, and Dracula bites him instead. The watchman turns into a vampire. Dracula then uses his powers to make Penguin serve him. Penguin becomes Dracula's helper during the day.
One night, Batman sees a vampire attack. Later, as Bruce Wayne, he hosts a fancy party. Dracula arrives at the party. He pretends to be a scientist named Dr. "Alucard." He says he wants to study Batman. Dracula becomes interested in Vicki Vale, a reporter who is dating Bruce.
Dracula tries to bite Bruce, but fails. He bites a waiter instead. This new vampire scares Bruce's butler, Alfred. Bruce quickly figures out that "Alucard" is actually Dracula. He realizes that people disappearing in Gotham are being turned into vampires. The news calls these missing people "Lost Ones."
People mistakenly think Batman is the one causing the attacks. This is because witnesses say they saw a bat-like figure. Batman goes to Gotham Cemetery to find Dracula. A SWAT team chases him. Dracula turns the SWAT team members into vampires.
Dracula fights Batman and offers him a chance to join him. Batman refuses. Dracula almost defeats Batman. But the sun rises, forcing Dracula to leave. He promises to get revenge on Batman.
At the cemetery, the Joker reappears. He is alive and well. He confronts Penguin, asking about the hidden treasure. Joker chases Penguin into Dracula's tomb. Penguin warns him not to open Dracula's coffin. But Joker opens it anyway. Dracula bites the Joker.
The Joker then attacks a blood bank. Batman captures him. Batman tries to make a cure from the Joker's blood. Alfred discovers that Dracula once had a vampire bride named Carmilla Karnstein. She was killed by sunlight.
While Bruce is busy, he misses a date with Vicki. Dracula then kidnaps Vicki. Batman successfully cures the Joker of his vampirism. He learns where Dracula's secret lair is in Gotham Cemetery. Batman sends the Joker back to Arkham. He then makes a lot of the vampire cure.
Dracula tries to use Vicki's soul to bring Carmilla back to life. Batman rushes to Dracula's lair. He brings his cure and weapons. He defeats and cures all the "Lost Ones" who attack him. Batman frees Vicki, stopping Dracula's plan.
Dracula sends the Penguin to recapture Vicki. Batman fights Dracula. Batman leads Dracula to the Batcave. Here, Batman has the advantage. Alfred tries to help by injecting Dracula with the cure. But it does not work on a natural vampire.
Dracula continues to chase Batman. Batman uses a special machine that stores solar energy. He hits Dracula with the stored sunlight. This turns Dracula into a pile of ashes and bones. Alfred secures Dracula's remains.
This also frees Penguin from Dracula's control. Penguin, while chasing Vicki, finally finds the hidden treasure. But Penguin is arrested. The media blames him for Dracula's kidnappings. They think he forced people to find the treasure. Batman is cleared of all charges. He continues to protect Gotham City.
