The Centre at Salisbury is a very large shopping mall in Salisbury, Maryland. It's owned by Brookfield Properties. This mall is the only big shopping center like it for about 60 miles around!

The mall has many stores, including major ones like Boscov's, Burlington, and Dick's Sporting Goods. You can also catch a movie at its 16-screen Regal Cinemas movie theater. The Centre at Salisbury is the biggest shopping mall on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

History of the Centre at Salisbury

When Did the Mall Open?

Building The Centre at Salisbury started in April 1989. The mall officially opened its doors on July 27, 1990. It was built about 3 miles north of an older mall called the Salisbury Mall, which opened in 1968.

The new Centre at Salisbury helped bring an end to the older Salisbury Mall. This happened because a new road, the Salisbury bypass, was built. This bypass connected U.S. Route 13 and U.S. Route 50, helping to ease traffic in downtown Salisbury.

The Centre was built in a smart spot, right where these two major highways meet. This location helped it get local shoppers from U.S. Route 13 and also beach visitors from the bypass.

What Stores Were There at the Start?

When The Centre first opened, it had several big stores. These included Hecht's, Boscov's, JCPenney, Sears, and Montgomery Ward.

The new mall was able to attract fancier stores that the older Salisbury Mall didn't have. It also had things that most big malls offered, like a food court and a modern 10-screen movie theater. (This theater later grew to 16 screens!) Before The Centre opened, people often had to drive more than two hours to cities like Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Norfolk, or Philadelphia to find these kinds of stores.

Who Has Owned The Centre?

In December 1995, a company called Macerich bought the mall from the original builders, Salisbury Springhill Ltd. Later, in December 2013, Macerich sold the mall to Rouse Properties.

Changes to Stores Over Time

In 2000, the store Montgomery Ward closed down. Its space was then turned into the new Regal Cinemas movie theater, with some extra shops outside. The Hecht's store became Macy's in 2006. This happened after a company called Federated Department Stores bought May Department Stores, which owned Hecht's.

On January 15, 2014, it was announced that the JCPenney store would close. It was one of 33 JCPenney stores closing across the country. JCPenney officially closed on May 3, 2014.

Later, on December 18, 2017, news came that Burlington Coat Factory would open in the old JCPenney spot. Burlington Coat Factory opened on September 15, 2018.

On December 28, 2018, Sears announced it would close its store at the mall. It was part of a plan to close 80 Sears stores nationwide. The Sears store closed in March 2019.

Finally, on January 6, 2020, it was announced that the Macy's store would also close. This was part of a plan to close 125 Macy's stores. The Macy's store closed in March 2020.

What Stores Are at The Centre Now?

The Centre at Salisbury has 78 stores and places to eat. It includes 3 main anchor stores, a food court, a 16-screen movie theater, and a soft play area for kids.

The food court used to have a Ruby Tuesday restaurant, but it closed in February 2021. Around the mall, you can find other restaurants like Chuck E. Cheese's, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Longhorn Steakhouse, and Greene Turtle. There's also a Vernon Powell Shoes store outside the mall.
