The Story of Tod and Copper
The movie starts with young Tod and Copper playing together. They are chasing a cricket when they see trucks bringing the county fair to town. Copper is amazed by the sound of dogs singing from an old bus. The bus has "The Singin' Strays" painted on its side.
Tod and Copper really want to go to the fair. But Copper's owner, Amos Slade, is upset with Copper's clumsy hunting skills. So, Slade ties Copper up and goes to the fair with his other dog, Chief. Tod helps Copper get free, and the two friends head to the fair.
Joining The Singin' Strays
At the fair, Tod and Copper meet The Singin' Strays. This band has five members: Dixie, Cash, Granny Rose, and twin brothers Waylon and Floyd. They are very nervous because a talent scout from the Grand Ole Opry will be watching their performance.
Cash and Dixie start arguing, and Dixie leaves before the show. This means the band has to perform without her. During their song, Copper starts singing along. Cash hears him and invites Copper to sing on stage. Their performance is a big hit! Cash then asks Copper to join the band. Copper agrees after Tod lies and says Copper is a stray dog with no home.
Copper spends the whole day with Cash and the band. He forgets his promise to watch the fireworks with Tod.
Trouble and Apologies
Dixie finds Tod and feels bad for him because Copper has forgotten him. While they talk, Tod accidentally tells Dixie that Copper is not a stray. Dixie then comes up with a plan to get Copper kicked out of the band.
Tod sneaks into Chief's doghouse, which makes Chief and Amos Slade chase him all the way to the fair. This chase causes a lot of chaos at the fair. The Singin' Strays' performance is ruined right in front of the talent scout, Mr. Bickerstaff. Copper gets fired from the band and goes home with Slade. Granny Rose and the other band members feel sorry for Copper, and the band breaks up.
Tod tries to say sorry to Copper, but Copper is very angry at Tod for messing everything up. Tod's owner, Widow Tweed, takes him home. On the way, Tweed almost gets hit by the talent scout's car. Bickerstaff's hat flies off and lands on Tod.
Making Things Right
The next day, Tod and Copper both admit they made mistakes, and they become friends again. Tod wants to make up for what he did. He gives Bickerstaff's hat to Copper. Copper uses the hat to track down the talent scout at a local diner.
Tod tricks Cash and Dixie into thinking the other is in trouble. This makes the whole band meet up at the diner. Copper explains to the band how important it is to work together. The Singin' Strays then sing their song "We're in Harmony" again. This attracts the attention of the talent scout.
Impressed by the band, the talent scout arranges for them to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. The movie ends with Copper choosing to leave the band and play with Tod again.
