The History of Frost Place
Robert Frost's Home
Local stories say that the famous poet Robert Frost found this house in 1915. He was looking for a home in the Franconia area. He bought the house from a farmer named Willis Herbert.
The house is one and a half stories tall. It has a long front porch. From the porch, you can see amazing views of the Franconia Range and Mount Lafayette.
Frost and his family lived in this house until 1920. They also spent their summers here for almost 20 years.
Becoming a Museum
The Frost Place became a museum in 1976. The town of Franconia bought the farm. Then, they fixed it up and gave it its name. It officially opened as a museum in 1977.
Since 1977, The Frost Place has given an award to new American poets. This award is called the "resident poet award." The poet gets money and can live and write in the house during the summer.
In 2013, The Frost Place started a new award. It's for a special kind of poetry book called a chapbook. The winning chapbook is published by Bull City Press.
Poetry Programs and Events
The Frost Place holds several events for people who love poetry. These events help people learn more about writing and enjoying poems.
- Conference on Poetry: This event is led by poet Gabrielle Calvocoressi. It's a chance for poets to learn and share their work.
- Poetry Seminar: Poet Patrick Donnelly leads this seminar. It offers in-depth study for poets.
- Conference on Poetry and Teaching: This event is for poets and teachers. It helps them learn how to teach poetry better. Poet Dawn Potter directs it.
How The Frost Place is Managed
A group of people called a board of trustees helps manage The Frost Place. They are in charge of the museum and all its programs.
Donald Sheehan was the executive director until 2005. Then, Jim Schley took over in 2006. From 2008 to 2011, the trustees managed the place themselves. In 2011, Maudelle Driskell became the executive director. In 2018, Jacob Rivers joined as an assistant to the director.
