The Hill is a suburb in Newcastle, Australia. It's a residential area right next to Newcastle's main city center. The Hill is famous for its beautiful old Victorian houses, especially its terraces. It also has a historic prison block from the time when convicts lived there.
As of January 2021, the average house price in The Hill was about A$1.92 million. This shows it's a popular and valuable place to live.
History of The Hill
The first people to live in this area were the Awabakal Aboriginal people. They were the traditional owners of this land.
The Hill was first called Church Hill, then Prospect Hill. It was one of the very first places settled in Newcastle. In 1823, Henry Dangar created the first town plan for this area. The first railway in Newcastle also started here. It began at a coal mine called AA Coy's A Pit, near Church Street.
The Boltons: Unique Homes
The area where The Boltons now stand was once a coal mine. Two engines used coal to create steam for the mine.
The Boltons are a group of four special houses. They are built in a style similar to homes you might see in San Francisco. These houses are made of timber. They were designed by Frederick B Menkins and built by G.W Brewer in 1904. Each house has four bedrooms and a bathroom. One of these houses recently sold for $1,725,000.
