Plot Summary
A Mysterious Dream
Littlefoot, a young Longneck dinosaur, has a strange dream. He sees the "Great Circle," which is the sun, falling from the sky. When he tells his grandparents, they say they had the same dream! His Grandpa Longneck feels they must go somewhere new. The next day, they leave, guided only by their feelings.
Littlefoot's friends, Cera, Spike, Ducky, and Petrie, are curious. They decide to follow Littlefoot and his grandparents.
New Friends and Dangers
During their journey, Littlefoot plays in a swamp. A large crocodile-like dinosaur called a Sarcosuchus almost catches him! Luckily, a huge Supersaurus named Sue steps on the Sarcosuchus and saves Littlefoot. Sue joins Littlefoot's group because she feels the same urge to travel. Soon, many other Longneck dinosaurs join them, all feeling the same instinct.
Meanwhile, Littlefoot's friends are also attacked by the Sarcosuchus in the same swamp. They manage to escape. Later, they sleep near a big rock. The next morning, they discover the "rock" is actually a sleeping Sharptooth! This gray Daspletosaurus wakes up and chases them. They hide in a small cave and meet Pat, an old Apatosaurus.
The Great Gathering
Littlefoot's group reaches a huge crater. Hundreds of Longneck dinosaurs have gathered there. To Littlefoot's surprise, he meets his father, Bron, for the first time! Bron was separated from Littlefoot's mother during an earthshake. Bron now looks after a young Brachiosaurus named Shorty. Shorty gets a bit jealous when Littlefoot gets all of Bron's attention.
Pat explains to Littlefoot's friends why all the Longnecks are gathering. It's an old tradition linked to a solar eclipse. Longnecks believe the eclipse means the "Night Circle" (the moon) will make the sun fall. So, during every solar eclipse, Longnecks from everywhere gather. They stretch their necks up to "catch" the sun and push it back into the sky.
Later, Pat accidentally steps into a pool of hot lava. His foot gets burned, but he can still move. They quickly escape the lava field.
The Eclipse and the Fight
On the day of the eclipse, Littlefoot wakes up. He sees Shorty running away over the crater walls. Shorty is still upset about Bron ignoring him. Littlefoot catches up to Shorty and convinces him to stay. They make up and decide to be like brothers.
Just as Littlefoot reunites with his friends, a second Sharptooth (a brown Daspletosaurus) appears and attacks! Pat tries to protect the children, but his burned foot slows him down. Bron rushes in to help. He fights the Sharptooth and is almost defeated. But Pat returns and saves Bron! Together, they manage to knock out the Sharptooth.
Then, a third Sharptooth (a green Daspletosaurus) appears. The gray Sharptooth from the swamp also wakes up and joins the fight. Littlefoot's grandparents help too and defeat the green Sharptooth. Bron fights the brown Sharptooth again, while Pat fights the gray one. All three Sharpteeth are finally defeated. Just then, the eclipse begins. The sudden darkness scares the Sharpteeth away.
Saying Goodbye
Littlefoot, his grandparents, Bron, Shorty, Sue, and Pat join the other Longnecks. They all stand on the crater walls. They stretch their necks up and successfully "catch" the sun! Everyone cheers as the eclipse ends.
With their mission complete, the different Longneck groups start to leave. Sue goes with an Ultrasaurus. Littlefoot's friends ask Pat to come live with them in the Great Valley, and he agrees. Littlefoot is sad to leave Bron, who leads a traveling herd. But Littlefoot realizes his home is in the Great Valley. Bron understands and leaves with Shorty and his herd. He promises to visit Littlefoot. Littlefoot returns to the Valley with his friends, grandparents, and Pat.
