What's the Story?
Tony Meets a Vampire
The movie begins with 9-year-old Tony Thompson (Jonathan Lipnicki). He moves with his family from California to Scotland. His dad is building a golf course for Lord McAshton. Tony has bad dreams about vampires and a strange comet. School is also tough because Lord McAshton's (John Wood) grandsons, Flint and Nigel, pick on him.
One night, Tony is dressed as a vampire for fun. A young vampire named Rudolph (Rollo Weeks) mistakes him for one. Rudolph is running from a mean vampire hunter named Rookery (Jim Carter). Rudolph is weak and can't fly away. Tony helps him find a cow to drink blood from. In return, Rudolph takes Tony flying.
New Friends and a Big Secret
Tony and Rudolph quickly become good friends. Rudolph tells Tony that his family only drinks animal blood. They want to become human. They are looking for a special amulet that can turn vampires into people. But Rookery, the hunter, also wants the amulet. He plans to use it against them.
Rudolph takes Tony to his family's cemetery home. There, Tony meets Rudolph's parents, Frederick (Richard E. Grant) and Freda (Alice Krige). He also meets Rudolph's sister Anna (Anna Popplewell) and brother Gregory (Dean Cook). Frederick doesn't trust Tony at first. But Tony helps them fight off an attack from Rookery. So, Frederick agrees to let Tony help. Tony and Rudolph then get back at Flint and Nigel for bullying Tony.
The Hunt for the Amulet
Rookery tells Lord McAshton about the vampires in the village. Lord McAshton reveals that his family has known about vampires for a long time. His ancestor, Elizabeth, was in love with Rudolph's uncle, Von. Von was the last person to have the amulet. Both Elizabeth and Von were killed by the McAshton family.
Tony, Rudolph, and Anna search Elizabeth's tomb. Tony has a vision that shows him where the amulet is: in his own bedroom! Tony and Rudolph race Rookery to get the amulet. Meanwhile, Rudolph's family and Tony's parents go to the place where the vampires hope to perform the special ceremony. Tony and Rudolph get the amulet. Rookery accidentally drives his truck off a cliff while chasing them.
A New Beginning
Tony and Rudolph bring the amulet to Frederick. But Rookery returns, riding a blimp, and interrupts the ceremony. The vampires can't fight Rookery's glowing cross. But Tony's parents step in and defend them. They defeat Rookery, pushing him off a cliff.
Tony finishes the ceremony by wishing for the vampires to become human. Rudolph and his family disappear as the comet passes. Tony and his parents are left wondering if the ceremony worked. Later, Tony sees Rudolph and his family at the village market. They are now human and moving into a house! At first, they don't seem to remember Tony. But when Tony whistles their special signal, their memories return. The friends are reunited!
