The Mighty Heroes was an animated TV show made by Ralph Bakshi for the Terrytoons company. The show first aired on CBS on October 29, 1966. It had one season with 20 episodes.

The stories took place in Good Haven, a made-up city that was always having problems with different supervillains. When trouble started, the city would launch a huge fireworks display. This would call a group of five flying superheroes into action: Strong Man, Rope Man, Tornado Man, Cuckoo Man, and Diaper Man.

About the Show

In the first part of each episode, the heroes were often clumsy and made mistakes. They would often get tangled up while fighting and apologize to each other, sometimes even falling together until the villain caught them.

But in the second part, after escaping the villain's dangerous trap, the team always managed to get back together. They would then work as a team and fight properly to win the day. Some of the bad guys they faced included the Drifter, the Ghost Monster, the Enlarger, the Frog, and the Toy Man.

Later Appearances

Reruns of The Mighty Heroes were shown again on TV by Viacom (which is now CBS Television Distribution) in the 1970s. They were part of a package of cartoons called Mighty Mouse.

The heroes also appeared in a special episode called "Heroes and Zeroes" of the late 1980s show Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures. In this episode, they had stopped being heroes and were working at an accounting office. Even Diaper Man had grown up and had a mustache!

Short cartoons of Mighty Heroes were also shown in movie theaters between 1969 and 1971.

Comic Books

The Mighty Heroes also had three different comic book series:

  • The first series was made by Dell Comics in 1967 and had four issues.
  • The second series was made by Spotlight Comics in 1987 and had one issue.
  • The third series was made by Marvel Comics in 1998 and also had one issue.

Meet the Heroes

All five of the Mighty Heroes could fly. Here's a bit about each of them:

  • Strong Man has super strength. He talks with a friendly, country-like voice and works as a mechanic when he's not being a hero. His favorite move is his "jet-propelled blow," where he flies into a villain with his fist first.
  • Rope Man is a sailor who works at the docks. He is smart and has a British accent. He can turn into a very long piece of rope. He can use his hands like lassos and can even weave himself into a net. The problem with his powers is that he often gets tangled or knotted, sometimes even around his own teammates.
  • Tornado Man is a TV weather forecaster. He can spin himself into a tornado. He often sucks the villains into his spinning wind, then shoots them out towards a wall. He speaks in a soft, wheezy voice.
  • Cuckoo Man owns a bird shop. His powers are the most limited in the group. While the other heroes can fly easily, Cuckoo Man has to flap his arms almost all the time to stay in the air. At the end of every episode, he is always flying behind the others. Cuckoo Man changes into his costume by jumping up through the bottom of his store's cuckoo clock and popping out of the little door.
  • Diaper Man is a red-headed baby who wears a diaper, but he can talk clearly. He sounds a lot like Popeye the Sailor Man and is the leader of the group. His main weapon is his bottle. He can swing it around or shoot it like a slingshot by holding onto the rubber part. The bottle can also shoot strong streams of baby milk. In emergencies, Diaper Man (and sometimes Strong Man) will drink some milk from the bottle when they need extra strength.
