The Pines is a small area in the Australian state of South Australia. It is located on the western side of the Yorke Peninsula, right by the water of Hardwicke Bay in Spencer Gulf. The Pines is about 131 kilometers west of Adelaide, a big city in South Australia.
History of The Pines
The area officially became known as The Pines in May 1999. Before that, it was already a well-known spot. It included a place called the Collin Beach Shack Site.
When The Pines' borders were set, it ended up completely surrounding another small area called Couch Beach. Couch Beach is only open to the coastline.
What the Land is Used For
In 2015, the land in The Pines was mainly used for two things. A lot of it was for agriculture, like farming. The other main use was for "water protection." This means protecting the underground water sources that are close to the surface.
This water protection area allows for activities like growing crops over large areas and raising animals. It also allows for wind farms to be built.
A third use for the land is for homes. This includes the original housing areas and the old shack site near the coast. There is also a fourth land use, which is for conservation. This means protecting nature. This includes the strip of land right next to the coast. It also includes the Leven Beach Conservation Park, which is in the northeast part of The Pines.
Government and Representation
The Pines is part of different government areas. For federal elections, it is in the Division of Grey. For state elections in South Australia, it is in the Electoral district of Narungga. Locally, it is managed by the Yorke Peninsula Council.
