Thomas Joseph Delaney, born on September 3, 1991, is a professional football player from Denmark. He plays as a defensive midfielder for the Danish club Copenhagen.

Thomas started his football journey at Copenhagen. He played 249 games and scored 24 goals for them. During this time, he helped his team win the Danish Superliga five times and the Danish Cup four times. Later, he played for clubs in Germany, like Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund. In 2021, he moved to Spain to play for Sevilla. He also played on loan for TSG Hoffenheim and Anderlecht. In 2024, Thomas came back to Copenhagen.

Thomas first played for the Danish national team in 2013. He was part of the Danish teams for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2020, the 2022 World Cup, and Euro 2024. His team reached the semi-finals in the Euro 2020 tournament.

Starting at Copenhagen

Thomas Delaney began playing youth football at Kjøbenhavns Boldklub. This club is the reserve team for Copenhagen.

He made his first appearance for Copenhagen in a friendly game in August 2008. After playing for the youth team, he joined the main Copenhagen squad for the Danish Cup season. His official debut was in April 2009, during a semi-final match against Nordvest FC.

In the summer of 2009, Thomas joined the first team. He scored his first goal in a European competition on July 22, 2009. This was during a Champions League qualifying match against FK Mogren. His first Superliga game was on August 9, 2009, against SønderjyskE. In December 2011, he signed a new contract to stay with Copenhagen until the end of 2014. Even though he was only 20, he was the longest-serving player at the club.

On July 6, 2013, Thomas extended his contract with the club until 2015. He also received jersey number 8. In the next season, he became a regular player in his favorite position. This included playing in UEFA Champions League matches against big teams like Juventus and Real Madrid. In January 2014, he extended his contract again, until 2017. He was also made the team's vice-captain. Six months later, Thomas became the official club captain.

On May 14, 2015, he was named Man of the Match in the Danish Cup final. His team won 3–2 after extra time against FC Vestsjælland. On September 27, 2016, Thomas scored an amazing goal from 30 yards out. This was in a 4–0 win against Club Brugge KV in the UEFA Champions League. This goal was voted the third best goal of the season in the Champions League.

Playing for Werder Bremen

On August 17, 2016, Werder Bremen announced that Thomas would join their club in January 2017. On February 18, 2017, he scored his first goal for the club. It was a free kick in Werder Bremen's 2–0 win against Mainz 05. This was the club's first win of the year after four losses.

On April 1, 2017, Thomas scored three goals in one game, which is called a hat-trick. This was his first hat-trick in his career. It happened in Werder Bremen's 5–2 win against SC Freiburg.

Time at Borussia Dortmund

On June 7, 2018, Thomas Delaney signed a four-year contract with Borussia Dortmund. The transfer fee paid to Werder Bremen was about €20 million. On May 13, 2021, Thomas came on as a substitute for Dortmund. His team won 4–1 against RB Leipzig in the 2021 DFB-Pokal Final.

Moving to Sevilla

On August 25, 2021, Thomas moved to Spain to join the La Liga club Sevilla. He signed a four-year deal. The fee for his transfer was reported to be around €7 million.

Loan to TSG Hoffenheim

On January 30, 2023, Thomas returned to Germany. He joined TSG Hoffenheim on loan until the end of the 2022–23 season.

Loan to Anderlecht

On August 22, 2023, Thomas joined the Belgian Pro League club Anderlecht. This was a loan for the season, with an option for them to buy him later. He played his first game for Anderlecht on August 27, 2023, in a 2-1 win against Charleroi. He scored his first goal for the team on December 1, 2023, in a 3-1 win against KVC Westerlo. Thomas had some injuries at Anderlecht, which limited his playing time. Because of this, Anderlecht decided not to buy him. He played a total of 25 games for the club.

Returning to Copenhagen

On July 20, 2024, after 7.5 years away, Thomas finally returned to his former club, Copenhagen. He signed a two-year contract with the Danish Superliga team.

International Football Career

Thomas Delaney first played for the Denmark under-18 team in October 2008. He played three matches for them. He also played 11 games for the Denmark U-19 team. On August 11, 2010, he made his debut for the Denmark U-21 team. This was in a friendly game against the Italy U-21 team.

Thomas made his debut for the senior national team on October 15, 2013. This was a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Malta. He played the entire 90 minutes in their 6–0 home win.

His second game for the national team was on March 25, 2015. He came on as a substitute in a 3–2 friendly win against the United States. Thomas scored his first international goal on September 1, 2017. This goal opened a 4–0 home win over Poland in a World Cup qualification game. Three days later, he scored a hat-trick as his team came from behind to win 4–1 against Armenia.

In June 2018, he was chosen for Denmark's squad for the World Cup in Russia. He was also part of the 26-man squad for UEFA Euro 2020. He scored the first goal in the 2–1 quarter-final game against the Czech Republic. On August 25, 2024, Thomas announced that he was retiring from playing for the national team. He scored eight goals in 81 international games.

Thomas Delaney was born in Denmark and grew up there. His father was also born in Denmark but has American citizenship. This is because Thomas's paternal grandfather was born in the United States. Thomas also has Irish family roots. His paternal great-grandfather moved from Ireland to the United States in the 1800s during the Great Famine. Thomas is red–green colour blind.

Thomas married Michelle Lindemann Jensen on December 27, 2020. Michelle is the daughter of Henrik Jensen, a former coach for Brøndby. She is also the sister of Mike Jensen, a former national team player. Thomas and Michelle met while they were studying at Niels Brock Copenhagen Business College. They have a daughter named Billie, who was born in February 2021.
