Thomas Joseph Delaney (born on September 3, 1991) is a professional footballer from Denmark. He plays as a defensive midfielder for the Danish Superliga club Copenhagen.
Delaney started his football journey at Copenhagen, where he played in 249 matches and scored 24 goals. During his time there, he helped the team win the Danish Superliga five times and the Danish Cup four times. Later, he moved to Germany to play for Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund. He played in 107 Bundesliga matches before joining Sevilla in Spain in 2021. After playing on loan for TSG Hoffenheim and Anderlecht, Delaney returned to Copenhagen in 2024.
Thomas Delaney also played for the Danish national team starting in 2013. He was part of the squads for big tournaments like the 2018 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2020, the 2022 World Cup, and Euro 2024. He even helped Denmark reach the semi-finals of the Euro 2020 tournament.

Club Career Highlights
Starting at Copenhagen
Delaney began his youth football training at Kjøbenhavns Boldklub, which is the reserve team for Copenhagen. He made his first unofficial appearance for Copenhagen in August 2008.
He officially joined the first team in the summer of 2009. On July 22, 2009, he scored his first goal in a European competition. This was during a Champions League qualifying match against FK Mogren. His first game in the Superliga was on August 9, 2009.
In December 2011, Delaney signed a new contract to stay with Copenhagen until the end of 2014. Even though he was only 20, he was the player who had been at the club the longest. He became a regular player in the 2013–14 season, playing in important UEFA Champions League matches. In January 2014, he extended his contract again until 2017 and became the team's vice-captain. Six months later, he was made the official club captain.
On May 14, 2015, he was named "Man of the Match" in the Danish Cup final. His team won 3–2 against FC Vestsjælland after extra time. On September 27, 2016, Delaney scored an amazing goal from 30 yards out against Club Brugge KV in the UEFA Champions League. This goal was voted the third best goal of the season in the Champions League.
Moving to Werder Bremen

On August 17, 2016, it was announced that Delaney would join Werder Bremen in Germany in January 2017. He scored his first goal for the club on February 18, 2017, from a free kick. This helped Werder Bremen win 2–0 against Mainz 05. On April 1, 2017, Delaney scored three goals in one game, which is called a hat-trick. This was his first hat-trick, and it helped Werder Bremen win 5–2 against SC Freiburg.
Time at Borussia Dortmund
On June 7, 2018, Delaney signed a four-year contract with Borussia Dortmund. The transfer fee was reported to be around €20 million. On May 13, 2021, Delaney came on as a substitute in the 2021 DFB-Pokal Final. Borussia Dortmund won the match 4–1 against RB Leipzig.
Playing for Sevilla
On August 25, 2021, Delaney moved to Spain to join the La Liga team Sevilla. He signed a four-year deal.
Loan to TSG Hoffenheim
On January 30, 2023, Delaney went back to Germany to play for TSG Hoffenheim on a loan until the end of the 2022–23 season.
Loan to Anderlecht
On August 22, 2023, Delaney joined the Belgian Pro League club Anderlecht on a loan for the season. He played his first game for them on August 27, 2023, in a 2-1 win against Charleroi. He scored his first goal for Anderlecht on December 1, 2023, in a 3-1 win against KVC Westerlo. He played 25 matches for Anderlecht, but his time there was affected by injuries.
Returning to Copenhagen
On July 20, 2024, after 7.5 years away, Thomas Delaney made his return to his former club, FC København, signing a two-year deal.
International Career for Denmark
Delaney started playing for Denmark's youth national teams in 2008. He played for the under-18, under-19, and under-21 teams.
He made his debut for the senior national team on October 15, 2013. This was in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Malta, which Denmark won 6–0.
Delaney scored his first goal for Denmark on September 1, 2017, in a 4–0 win against Poland during 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification. Just three days later, he scored a hat-trick (three goals) in a 4–1 away win against Armenia.
In June 2018, he was chosen to be part of Denmark's squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He also played in UEFA Euro 2020. He scored the first goal in the quarter-final game against the Czech Republic, which Denmark won 2–1. On August 25, 2024, Delaney announced he was retiring from playing for the national team. He scored eight goals in 81 international games.
Personal Life
Thomas Delaney was born in Denmark. His father was also born in Denmark but has American citizenship because Thomas's paternal grandfather was born in the United States. Thomas also has Irish family roots from his great-grandfather, who moved from Ireland to the U.S. in the 1800s.
Delaney is colour blind, specifically red–green colour blind.
He married Michelle Lindemann Jensen on December 27, 2020. Michelle's father, Henrik Jensen, was a football coach, and her brother, Mike Jensen, was also a national team player. Thomas and Michelle met when they were studying at Niels Brock Copenhagen Business College. They have a daughter named Billie, who was born in February 2021.
