Thomas George Bonney (born July 27, 1833 – died December 10, 1923) was an English geologist. A geologist is a scientist who studies the Earth's solid features, like rocks and mountains. Bonney was also the president of the Geological Society of London, a very important group for geologists.

Who Was Thomas Bonney?

Thomas George Bonney was born in Rugeley, Staffordshire, England. His father was a headmaster, which is like a school principal. Thomas went to Uppingham School and then to St John's College, Cambridge. He studied very hard and became a mathematics teacher.

From Math Teacher to Geologist

From 1856 to 1861, Bonney taught math at Westminster School. At first, geology was just a hobby for him. He loved exploring mountains, especially in the Alps, and looking at rocks.

In 1868, he became a tutor and geology lecturer at Cambridge. This was a big change! He started to focus on studying different types of rocks. He was especially interested in igneous rocks, which are formed from cooled lava, and metamorphic rocks, which are changed by heat and pressure. He studied rocks in places like Cornwall, Wales, and the Scottish Highlands.

Bonney's Important Roles

Thomas Bonney became a very respected scientist. From 1877 to 1901, he was a professor of geology at University College London. He also held many important positions:

  • He was the secretary and later the president of the Geological Society of London.
  • He was the secretary and president of the British Association.
  • He led the Mineralogical Society.
  • He was even president of the Alpine Club, which is for mountain climbers.

In 1878, he was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a special honor for top scientists. Thomas Bonney passed away in Cambridge in 1923. A place in Antarctica, Lake Bonney, is named after him.
