History of Thompson
The first people to live in Thompson were business owners. They came to help the new settlers who were moving into the area.
At first, the town was called Norton. This was because the first buildings were near land owned by a person named George Norton. However, when the railroad arrived in 1881, the name caused a problem. There was already a town called Norton nearby in Minnesota.
So, the town's name had to change. Albert Thompson, who owned a general store with his brother Robert, became the postmaster in January 1881. The town was then renamed Thompson to honor him.
