A Look Back: History of Thornbury

Thornbury used to be its own small village. But in 1882, it became part of the larger city of Bradford.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Thornbury was a busy place for businesses. Many companies here made machines and textiles (like cloth). On Leeds Road, there were big buildings that used to be for trams and buses. Bradford used to have its own tram, bus, and trolleybus services. The Bradford Corporation Trams even built over 150 tram cars right here in Thornbury!

Did you know that the famous Buffalo Bill brought his amazing Wild West Show to Thornbury? He performed here in 1903 when he was touring England.

There was also a cinema called the Kozey Picture Hall. It started as a boxing stadium and gym. Then, in 1912, it became a cinema on Leeds Old Road. It closed in 1920 because a bigger cinema, the Lyceum, opened nearby in Laisterdyke. After that, the building was used for weaving cloth.

Thornbury is still a busy place today! On Gain Lane, you can find the bakeries for British Bakeries and the main office for Wm Morrison Supermarkets.

Near Leeds Old Road, the Woodhall Retail Centre has supermarkets and the Thornbury Medical Centre. The Thornbury Centre is also on Leeds Old Road. It's a place for meetings, a library, and a church. It opened in 1999 and was built where the old St. Margaret's Church used to be. The project got a lot of money from the Millennium Commission. There is only one public house (a type of pub) still open in Thornbury.
