Thornton Fleming Brodhead (1822 – August 31, 1862) was an important military leader during the American Civil War. He served as a brevet brigadier general for the Union Army. This means he was given a higher rank for brave actions, but it was not a permanent promotion. He also had a career in law and politics before the war.
A Life of Service
Thornton Fleming Brodhead was born in Newmarket, New Hampshire, on September 22, 1822. He studied law at Harvard. After finishing his studies, he moved to Pontiac, Michigan.
In Michigan, he became a prosecuting attorney. This job meant he worked for the government to bring criminals to justice. Later, he was appointed deputy Secretary of State. At age 27, he became a state senator for Michigan. This meant he helped make laws for the state. In 1852, he was chosen to be the postmaster of Detroit. He was in charge of the mail service there.
Military Career
Brodhead also had a military career. In April 1847, he joined the 15th U.S. Infantry. This was during the Mexican–American War. He started as a First Lieutenant. He was quickly promoted to captain because of his bravery. He left the army in July 1848 when the war ended.
When the American Civil War began, Brodhead helped form the 1st Michigan Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. He led this group of soldiers. He served under several important generals, including Banks and Fremont.
His Final Battle
Thornton Brodhead was badly wounded during the Second Battle of Bull Run. This was a major battle of the Civil War. He died from his injuries on August 31, 1862.
Family Life
Thornton Brodhead was married to Archange Macomb. She was the daughter of a general named Macomb. Together, Thornton and Archange had six children.
