Threepoint Mountain is a cool mountain with three pointy tops located in the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, Canada. It stands tall at 2,595-metre (8,514-foot) and is found in the Elbow River valley within Kananaskis Country. This mountain is southwest of Calgary and can be seen from Highway 66.

Threepoint Mountain's closest taller neighbor is Bluerock Mountain, which is about 4.7 km (2.9 mi) to the south. The mountain officially received its name in 1951 from the Geographical Names Board of Canada.

What is Threepoint Mountain Made Of?

Threepoint Mountain is made of sedimentary rock. This type of rock forms from layers of sand, mud, and tiny bits of plants and animals that settle over millions of years. These layers get pressed together and turn into rock.

Long, long ago, these rock layers were pushed up and over other, younger rocks. This happened during a time when huge forces deep inside the Earth caused the land to fold and lift, creating mountains.

Weather and Climate Around Threepoint Mountain

Threepoint Mountain is in a subarctic climate zone. This means it has very cold, snowy winters and mild summers. Temperatures can often drop below −20 °C (which is −4 °F). When you add the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below −30 °C (−22 °F).

If you want to visit or climb the mountain, the best time is usually from June through October. During these months, the weather is much nicer and safer for outdoor activities. All the rain and melting snow from the mountain flow into streams that eventually join the Elbow River.
