Throop Peak is a tall mountain in the San Gabriel Mountains in California. It stands at 9,142 feet high! This peak is part of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and the Angeles National Forest. It's located in Los Angeles County, California.

From the top of Throop Peak, you can see amazing views. You might spot the dry Mojave Desert on one side and the big Los Angeles Basin on the other. On a clear day, you can even see all the way to the ocean! The mountain is named after Amos G. Throop. He was the person who started Caltech, a famous science and engineering school. Throop Peak also marks the edge of the Sheep Mountain Wilderness, a special protected area.

Getting to Throop Peak

If you want to climb Throop Peak, you can start your hike at Dawson Saddle. This spot is located along the Angeles Crest Highway. The path takes you through a beautiful forest.

As you hike, you will see many different kinds of trees. These include tall Jeffrey Pines, large Sugar Pines, and slender Lodgepole Pines. You might also spot some White Firs along the way.

Best Time to Visit

The most popular times to climb Throop Peak are during spring and fall. This is because the weather is cooler and more comfortable for hiking. It's also easier to get to the trailhead during these seasons.
