The River's Journey
The Théodat River is surrounded by other important waterways. To the north, you'll find the Poles River and La Marte River. To the east are the Broadback River and Assinica River. South of the Théodat River are the Salamandre River and Nipukatasi River. To the west, you'll find Evans Lake and the Chabinoche River.
Where the River Starts
The Théodat River begins in a small, unnamed forested lake. This lake is about 317 metres (1,040 ft) above sea level. This starting point is located about 64.4 kilometres (40.0 mi) northeast of where the Théodat River ends. It's also about 84.6 kilometres (52.6 mi) northeast of Evans Lake.
How the River Flows
From its source, the Théodat River travels for about 117.4 kilometres (72.9 mi). Its journey can be thought of in two main parts.
Upper Part of the River
The first part of the river flows for about 50.1 kilometres (31.1 mi). It goes through the Assinica Wildlife Sanctuary. Along this section, the river flows southwest, then west, crossing through Hobier Lake. This lake is about 8.9 kilometres (5.5 mi) long. The river then continues west and northwest, passing by several smaller, unnamed lakes.
Lower Part of the River
The second part of the river flows for about 67.3 kilometres (41.8 mi). In this section, the river flows west through Théodat Lake. This lake is about 20.1 kilometres (12.5 mi) long. After leaving Théodat Lake, the river winds through marshy areas. It then crosses another unnamed lake before reaching Le Gardeur Lake. The river flows northwest through Le Gardeur Lake, which is about 16.0 kilometres (9.9 mi) long. Finally, it crosses a small unnamed lake before reaching its end.
Where the River Ends
The Théodat River flows into the northeast part of Evans Lake. It enters the lake facing a small island that is about 1.1 kilometres (0.68 mi) long. The larger Broadback River flows through the northern part of Evans Lake.
The mouth of the Théodat River is about 20.2 kilometres (12.6 mi) east of where Evans Lake joins the Broadback River. It's also about 155.6 kilometres (96.7 mi) north of the town of Matagami.
How the River Got its Name
The name "Théodat River" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This happened when the Commission de toponymie du Québec (Quebec's Place Names Commission) was first created.
