Tijeras Peak is a tall mountain in the Sangre de Cristo Range. This mountain range is part of the larger Rocky Mountains in North America. Tijeras Peak is located in Colorado, United States.
This mountain is special because it's the highest point inside Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. It stands at 13,610-foot (4,148 m) high. Mountains over 13,000 feet (but under 14,000 feet) are sometimes called "thirteeners."
The name Tijeras comes from the Spanish word for "scissors." If you look closely at the top of the mountain, you'll see it has a unique double-pointed shape, like the blades of scissors.
Where is Tijeras Peak?
Tijeras Peak is found in Saguache County, Colorado. It's about 9.8 miles (15.8 km) southeast of a small town called Crestone. The mountain is part of the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness. This wilderness area is a protected natural space.
The peak sits right on the edge of two important areas:
- Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve: This park is famous for its huge sand dunes.
- Rio Grande National Forest: This is a large forest area managed by the government.
