Timothy Simon Roth (pronounced roth; born May 14, 1961) is an English actor. He is known for his many different roles in films and TV shows. He was part of a group of talented British actors called the "Brit Pack" in the 1980s.

Tim Roth first gained attention for his role in the film The Hit (1984). For this role, he was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer. He also starred in films like The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), and Vincent & Theo (1990).

Roth has worked with famous director Quentin Tarantino on several movies. These include Reservoir Dogs (1992), Pulp Fiction (1994), Four Rooms (1995), and The Hateful Eight (2015). In 1995, he won a BAFTA Award for his acting in Rob Roy. He was also nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for this film.

Tim Roth also directed a film called The War Zone (1999). On television, he played Cal Lightman in the series Lie to Me (2009–2011) and Jim Worth in Tin Star (2017–2020). Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe might know him as Emil Blonsky, also known as The Abomination. He played this character in The Incredible Hulk (2008), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), and the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022).

Early Life and Education

Tim Roth was born in Dulwich, a part of London, England. His mother, Ann, was a painter and a teacher. His father, Ernie, was a journalist and also a painter. His father changed his last name to "Roth" in the 1940s to show his strong feelings against Nazis.

As a young man, Tim Roth was interested in art. He wanted to be a sculptor. He studied at the Camberwell College of Arts in London.

Tim Roth started his acting career in TV films during the 1980s. Some of these early roles were in Made in Britain and Meantime. After his first movie, The Hit, he won an award for being a promising new actor. He was part of a group of young British actors who became very popular, known as the "Brit Pack."

In 1990, he played the famous painter Vincent van Gogh in the film Vincent & Theo. He also played Guildenstern in Rosencranten & Guildenstern Are Dead.

Working with Quentin Tarantino

Tim Roth became known around the world after working with director Quentin Tarantino. Their movies together include the crime thrillers Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. He also appeared in Four Rooms, which was a comedy.

Award-Winning Roles

In 1995, Roth played Archibald Cunningham in the movie Rob Roy. His performance earned him a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe.

He later appeared in Woody Allen's musical film Everyone Says I Love You. He also starred in The Legend of 1900 and with rapper Tupac Shakur in Gridlock'd.

Directing and Other Projects

Tim Roth made his first film as a director with The War Zone in 1999. In 2001, he played the evil chimpanzee General Thade in Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes. Interestingly, he was offered the role of Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies but turned it down. The role then went to Alan Rickman.

Roth continued to take on diverse roles. He starred in Francis Ford Coppola's Youth Without Youth and Michael Haneke's Funny Games. He played Emil Blonsky, also known as Abomination, in The Incredible Hulk. The director, Louis Leterrier, was a big fan of Roth's acting.

On television, Roth starred in Lie to Me as Cal Lightman. His character was an expert in body language who helped solve crimes. In 2012, he was chosen to be the head of the jury for a special section at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

In 2014, Roth played FIFA President Sepp Blatter in the film United Passions. He also starred in the 2015 film Chronic, for which he received an award nomination. He played Oswaldo Mobray in the western film The Hateful Eight. More recently, he returned to his role as Emil Blonsky / Abomination in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) and the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022).

Personal Life

Tim Roth married Nikki Butler in 1993. They have two sons, Hunter and Cormac. Tim Roth also has another son, Jack, from a previous relationship, who is also an actor. Sadly, his son Cormac passed away in 2022 at the age of 25.

Tim Roth has shown support for environmental causes, being a supporter of the Green Party of England and Wales. He also supported Senator Bernie Sanders in the 2016 United States presidential election.
