Tinjacá is a town and a special area called a municipality in Boyacá Department, Colombia. It is part of the Ricaurte Province. Tinjacá is found on a high plain called the Altiplano Cundiboyacense. It is about 54 kilometers (34 miles) away from Tunja, which is the capital city of the department. Tinjacá shares its borders with several other towns: Sutamarchán to the north, Ráquira to the south, Sáchica to the east, and Chiquinquirá and Saboyá to the west.

What Does Tinjacá Mean?

The name Tinjacá comes from the Chibcha language. This was the language spoken by the Muisca people long ago. In their language, Tinjacá means "Enclosure of the powerful lord."

A Look at Tinjacá's History

Before the Spanish arrived, the area where Tinjacá is now was part of the Muisca Confederation. This was a group of different Muisca rulers who worked together. The local leader, known as a cacique, of Tinjacá was loyal to the main Muisca ruler of Hunza.

The modern town of Tinjacá was officially started on November 7, 1555. This was during the time of the Spanish Empire.

How Tinjacá Makes Money

The main ways people in Tinjacá earn a living are through agriculture (farming) and livestock farming (raising animals). Farmers in Tinjacá grow many important crops. These include onions, tomatoes, peaches, potatoes, maize (corn), and peas.
