Tobias Simpson Menzies (born 7 March 1974) is an English actor. He is famous for playing Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in the TV series The Crown. For this role, he won an Emmy Award.
Menzies also played two characters, Frank and Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, in the show Outlander. He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for this. Other well-known roles include Brutus in Rome and Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones.
Early Life and Education
Tobias Menzies was born in Hammersmith, London, England. His mother was a teacher, and his father worked as a radio producer for the BBC. He has a younger brother named Luke.
Menzies went to the Perry Court Rudolf Steiner School in Canterbury, Kent. There, he learned using the Steiner System, which includes movement, singing, and music. He later attended Frensham Heights School in Surrey.
From 1993 to 1994, Menzies studied at Deborah Moody's Year Out Drama Company. After that, he joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He graduated from RADA in 1998 with a degree in Acting.

Tobias Menzies has had a busy career in television, film, and theatre. He is known for his ability to play many different kinds of characters.
Television Roles
Menzies started his TV career in 1998 on the BBC medical drama Casualty. He appeared in eleven episodes. In 2000, he was in the crime drama Midsomer Murders.
Playing Brutus in Rome
From 2005 to 2007, Menzies played Marcus Junius Brutus in the historical drama Rome. Brutus was a friend of Julius Caesar who later helped to assassinate him. This role helped Menzies become more widely known.
Fantasy and Sci-Fi Shows
Menzies appeared in Game of Thrones as Edmure Tully. This was a recurring role from 2013 to 2019. He also starred in Outlander starting in 2014. In Outlander, he played two characters: Frank Randall, a historian from the 20th century, and his ancestor, Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, a brutal soldier from the 18th century.
In 2017, Menzies did his first voice-over work for television. He voiced the character Tiber Saxon in the animated series Star Wars Rebels. He also starred as Captain James Fitzjames in AMC's series The Terror in 2018. This show was about a real-life Arctic expedition that went missing.
Portraying Prince Philip in The Crown
In 2018, Menzies was chosen to play Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in The Crown. He appeared in seasons 3 and 4 of the Netflix series. His performance earned him an Emmy Award. He also received nominations for Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards.
More recently, Menzies joined the cast of the comedy series This Way Up in 2019. In 2024, he led the drama series Manhunt. This show is based on the book about the hunt for Abraham Lincoln's killer.
Film Appearances
Menzies' first film role was in the comedy The Low Down in 2000. In 2004, he appeared in Finding Neverland, a movie about the creator of Peter Pan.
James Bond and Other Films
In 2006, Menzies was in Casino Royale, a James Bond film. He played Villiers, an assistant to M, the head of the British secret intelligence agency. The next year, he was in the Academy Award-nominated war drama Atonement.
In 2016, Menzies starred as the main villain, Marius, in Underworld: Blood Wars. This was the fifth movie in the Underworld series. In 2019, he appeared in Carmilla, a fantasy film. More recently, he was in the 2023 film You Hurt My Feelings and the 2025 film F1.
Theatre Performances
Menzies began his theatre career in 1999 in The Colonel Bird. He has performed in many plays, including classic works.
Notable Stage Roles
In 2005, Menzies played Irwin in Alan Bennett's play The History Boys. He also took on the main role in Hamlet at the Royal Theatre, Northampton. Critics praised his performance in Hamlet, calling it "one of the finest and most exciting Hamlets" they had seen.
In 2011, Menzies was in The Children's Hour, a drama about the effects of false accusations. He also performed in Decade, a play marking the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks.
More recently, in 2019, Menzies starred in The Hunt at the Almeida Theatre. His performance as Lucas received very positive reviews. In 2024, he played Chris in The Other Place at the Royal National Theatre. His acting was highly praised for showing a character fighting for control and sanity.
Radio Work
Menzies has also lent his voice to several radio dramas and readings for BBC Radio. In 2010, he performed in A Nice Little Holiday. He narrated Now All Roads Lead to France in 2011.
He has read for BBC Radio 4's Book of the Week series multiple times. In 2014, he read As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning. In 2015, he narrated Landmarks and played Andy Warhol in Fifteen Minutes.
