Tobias Simpson Menzies (born 7 March 1974) is an English actor. He is famous for playing Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in the TV series The Crown. For this role, he won an Emmy Award.
Menzies also played two characters, Frank and Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, in the TV show Outlander. He was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for these roles. Other well-known parts include Brutus in Rome and Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones.

Early Life and Education
Tobias Menzies was born in Hammersmith, London, England. His mother was a teacher, and his father worked as a producer for BBC radio. He has a younger brother named Luke.
Tobias went to the Perry Court Rudolf Steiner School in Canterbury, Kent. There, he learned using the Steiner System, which includes movement, singing, and music. He then attended Frensham Heights School in Surrey.
From 1993 to 1994, Menzies studied at the Year Out Drama Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. After that, he joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where he earned a degree in Acting in 1998.

Tobias Menzies has had a long and successful career in television, film, and theatre.
Television Roles
Menzies started his TV career in 1998 on the BBC medical drama Casualty. He also appeared in crime dramas like Midsomer Murders and Foyle's War.
From 2005 to 2007, he played Brutus, a friend of Julius Caesar, in the historical drama Rome. He also appeared in TV adaptations of classic stories, such as Jane Austen's Persuasion.
In 2010, Menzies starred in The Deep, a science fiction show about submarines. That same year, he played the real-life Naval Intelligence officer Ian Fleming in the mini-series Any Human Heart.
In 2013, Menzies joined the cast of HBO's Game of Thrones as Edmure Tully. He appeared in this popular fantasy series until its final season in 2019. Also in 2013, he was in an episode of the anthology series Black Mirror.
From 2014 to 2018, Menzies played two different characters in the time-travel drama Outlander. He was Frank Randall, a 20th-century historian, and his ancestor, Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, from the 18th century.
In 2016, he appeared in The Night Manager, an espionage (spy) series. In 2017, he did his first voice-over work for TV, playing Tiber Saxon in the animated series Star Wars Rebels. He also starred as Captain James Fitzjames in AMC's series The Terror, which was about a lost Arctic expedition.
One of his most famous roles began in 2018 when he was cast as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in seasons 3 and 4 of Netflix's The Crown. He acted alongside Olivia Colman, who played Queen Elizabeth II. His performance earned him an Emmy Award and nominations for other major awards.
Film Appearances
Menzies' first film role was in the 2000 comedy The Low Down. In 2004, he appeared in Finding Neverland, a movie about J. M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan.
In 2006, he was in the James Bond film Casino Royale, playing an assistant to M, the head of the British secret intelligence agency. The next year, he was in the Academy Award-nominated WWII drama Atonement.
In 2010, Menzies provided a voice for the animated puppet film Jackboots on Whitehall. He also starred in the independent drama Forget Me Not. In 2014, he appeared in the submarine action film Black Sea, alongside Jude Law.
In 2016, he played the main villain, Marius, in Underworld: Blood Wars, a fantasy action film. In 2019, he was in Carmilla, a fantasy film based on a Gothic story.
Theatre Performances
Tobias Menzies has a strong background in theatre. His first stage role was in 1999 in The Colonel Bird. He has performed in many classic plays, including The Way of the World and Platonov.
In 2005, he played Irwin in The History Boys at the Royal National Theatre. He was also nominated for an award for his role in Three Sisters. One of his most notable theatre roles was playing the main character in Hamlet at the Royal Theatre, Northampton. Critics praised his performance, with one calling it "one of the finest and most exciting Hamlets I’ve seen."
In 2011, he starred in The Children's Hour, a drama about the effects of false accusations. He also performed in Decade, a play created to mark the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks.
More recently, in 2019, Menzies starred in The Hunt at the Almeida Theatre. His performance received very positive reviews. In 2024, he played Chris in The Other Place at the Royal National Theatre, a modern version of the character Creon (king of Thebes) from the story of Antigone.
Radio Work
Menzies has also performed in many radio dramas for the BBC. His first radio role was in 2010 in A Nice Little Holiday. He has narrated several Book of the Week series for BBC Radio 4, reading books by authors like Matthew Hollis and Laurie Lee.
In 2013, he played British writer James Lees-Milne in a three-part radio drama series. He has also been part of other radio plays, including Serious Money and Every Duchess In England.
