Tom Bean is a small city located in Grayson County, Texas, United States. In 2020, about 930 people lived there. This was a bit less than the 1,045 people counted in 2010.

Tom Bean is part of the larger Sherman and Denison metropolitan area. This means it's connected to these bigger cities nearby.

History of Tom Bean

Tom Bean was founded on October 27, 1888. It started because a new railroad line, the Cotton Belt Railway, was built between Commerce and Sherman, Texas.

How Tom Bean Got Its Name

The town was named by J.W. Pennell. He named it after his friend, Thomas C. Bean. Thomas Bean was a rich land surveyor who owned a lot of land in the area. He was also known for being a bit unusual.

Mr. Bean helped the town grow by giving land for the railroad tracks. He also donated 50 acres of land for the town itself. Thomas Bean passed away in 1887, the same year the city of Tom Bean officially started.

Early Days and Growth

Before Tom Bean, there was a nearby town called Whitemound. When the railroad bypassed Whitemound, its post office moved to Tom Bean in 1888. Many people from Whitemound also moved to Tom Bean. They built new homes and businesses there.

In the 1890s, Mr. Bean's estate began selling lots of land around the railroad. The city school, which was once a single room, moved into a two-story building in 1891. This new building even had an auditorium. Several churches, like the Church of Christ, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Methodist, were also built.

J.B. Hindman was the first railroad agent. A simple boxcar was used as the first train station until a proper one was built in February 1888. The main business area was first built next to the railroad. However, in 1906, new brick buildings were put up one block south of the tracks.

Becoming an Official City

Tom Bean first voted to become an official city in mid-1891. W.W. Arnold was elected as the first Mayor in 1893. H.A. Sroufe became the first City Marshal. A city charter, which is like a rulebook for the city, was signed in 1897. After that, Ice B. Reeves was elected as the first mayor under the new charter.

Boom and Change

In the early 1900s, Tom Bean grew quickly. It had many businesses, including a grain company and a furniture store. There was also a drugstore, a newspaper called the Tom Bean Bulletin, a saloon, and a dance hall. The town even had a movie theater, a justice court, a jail, and a social club.

Over time, more people started using cars for travel and transport. Also, cotton became less important as a main crop in the area. Because of these changes, many businesses moved to bigger cities like Denison and Sherman.

Tom Bean was never again as busy as it was during the railroad boom. However, it grew again in the 1950s and 1980s. The city celebrated its 100th birthday in 1987. Today, Tom Bean continues to grow because it is close to Sherman, which is about 11 miles away.
