Tom Chilton's Racing Journey

Early Life and First Races

Tom Chilton was born in Reigate, England. He started racing at a young age. In 1999 and 2000, he competed in the BRSCC T Cars Championship. He then won the BRSCC Saloon Car winter championship in 2001.

British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) Adventures

Starting Young with Barwell Motorsport (2002)

In 2002, Tom joined the BTCC, racing a Vauxhall Astra Coupé for Barwell Motorsport. He was only 17 years old, making him the youngest driver in the series at that time. Even though he was new, he showed great speed. He finished 15th overall and 5th in the Independents' Cup, which is a special award for drivers not supported by big car manufacturers.

Racing with Arena Motorsport (2003–2005)

In 2003, Tom drove a Honda Civic Type-R for the Honda Racing team. He finished 9th overall. When Honda stopped their direct support in 2004, Tom continued with Arena Motorsport. He won his first BTCC race at Silverstone, becoming the youngest winner ever in the series. He won another race later that year at Donington.

In 2005, Tom planned to race in the DTM series, but it didn't work out. He rejoined the BTCC and also raced in endurance series like the ALMS and LMS. He won races in both ALMS and LMS. Even though he missed some BTCC races, he still finished 5th overall.

Time with VX Racing (2006–2007)

VX Racing signed Tom for the 2006 season to drive a Vauxhall Astra. It was a tough year for Vauxhall, and Tom didn't win any races, finishing 7th overall. He stayed with Vauxhall in 2007 but decided to leave the team for 2008.

Joining Team Halfords (2008)

In 2008, Tom moved to Team Halfords. He won his first race since 2005 at Brands Hatch, securing 10th place in the championship.

Team Aon Years (2009–2011)

Tom returned to Arena Motorsport in 2009, racing a Ford Focus ST under the Team Aon name. He spent much of the year helping to improve the car. In 2010, the car became much faster. Tom won two races at Silverstone and earned the Independents' Trophy. This award goes to the best privateer driver, meaning they are not part of a big factory team.

For 2011, the team developed a new Ford Focus car. Tom took pole position (starting first) at Knockhill and won the first race there. He also won the final race of the season at Silverstone, finishing 7th overall.

Back with Power Maxed Racing (2017)

After five years away, Tom came back to the BTCC in 2017 with Power Maxed Racing, driving a Vauxhall Astra. He finished third in a race at Brands Hatch after starting from pole position.

Team Shredded Wheat Racing (2018-2019)

On December 20, 2017, Tom decided to focus fully on his BTCC career. He joined Motorbase Performance, a team that had won the Independents' title in 2016. They raced as Team Shredded Wheat Racing with Gallagher. Tom won his first race since 2011 at Knockhill, starting from pole in the third race.

BTC Racing (2020)

In 2020, Tom joined the BTC Racing team. He achieved a best finish of 2nd place at Thruxton. He ended the season 10th in the Driver's Championship and 4th in the Independent Driver's Championship.

Ciceley Motorsport (2021)

On January 12, 2021, Ciceley Motorsport announced that Tom Chilton would be joining their team for the 2021 season.

Excelr8 Motorsport (2022-Present)

In 2022, Tom joined Excelr8 Motorsport, driving a Hyundai i30 Fastback N Performance. He continued with them in 2023, winning a race at Donington Park. In 2024, he secured another win at Croft Circuit. As of July 2025, he is still racing for Team VERTU (Excelr8 Motorsport) and has already won a race at Donington Park.

World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) Experience

Tom made his debut in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) in 2012 with Arena Motorsport. He scored his first points for Ford in Morocco, finishing seventh. He faced some challenges, including a grid penalty for a collision and an engine change. He finished 19th in the drivers' standings. After the season, Arena Motorsport stopped their WTCC program.

Success with RML (2013)

For the 2013 season, Tom moved to RML, driving a Chevrolet Cruze. He finished second in the first race in Italy. He then achieved his first WTCC pole position and race win in the United States. He won another race in China, finishing 5th overall in the championship.

ROAL Motorsport (2014–2015)

In 2014, Tom joined ROAL Motorsport, driving a new Chevrolet Cruze. He took pole position, the fastest lap, and victory in the first race in Beijing. This made him the only non-Citroen driver to win a first race that year. He finished 8th in the season and continued with ROAL Motorsport in 2015.

Sébastien Loeb Racing (2016–2017)

In 2016, Tom raced a Citroën for Sébastien Loeb Racing. He won a race in Argentina and achieved six podium finishes (top three results). He finished second in the Independents' standings.

Tom continued with Sébastien Loeb Racing in 2017. He won three races that season in Monza, Motegi, and Losail. When he won in Losail, he also claimed the Independents' title. Overall, he finished 3rd in the championship, which was a fantastic achievement. This was the last season under the "World Championship" name before it changed to the World Touring Car Cup.

TV Appearances

Tom Chilton has appeared on the popular car show Top Gear several times. He participated in fun races, like a people carrier race and a Toyota Aygo football match. He also raced a Chevrolet motorhome and a Leyland Olympian bus. In one episode, he raced against Jeremy Clarkson in a BMW M3. He even raced a taxi cab against Richard Hammond.

In 2009, he was in a music video for singer-songwriter Andy J Gallagher. Tom also appeared on the ITV game show Take Me Out.
