Maximilian Alexander Chilton (born 21 April 1991) is a British former racing driver. He competed in Formula One from 2013 to 2014. Max is the younger brother of fellow racing driver Tom Chilton.
Max started his racing journey in karting. He then moved up to different car racing series. He raced in the GP2 Series from 2010 to 2012. After that, he joined Formula One with the Marussia team. Later, he competed in the IndyCar Series in the United States. Max holds a special record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed for hillclimbing.
Early Life and Family
Max Chilton was born in Redhill, Surrey and grew up in Reigate, England. He went to Ardingly College for his education. His father, Grahame Chilton, was a successful businessman. Max's older brother, Tom Chilton, is also a well-known racing driver.
Racing Career
Starting in Karts and T Cars
Max began his racing career at age 10 in karting. He spent two years learning how to race karts. He often finished on the podium in junior karting events.
At 14, Max started racing cars in the T Cars championship. This series is for young drivers aged 14 to 17. In his first year (2005), he finished eighth. The next year (2006), he was the runner-up, winning seven races.
Formula Three Racing
In 2007, Max moved up to British Formula 3. He was only 16 years old. He raced for Arena International.
In 2008, he joined Hitech Racing. He got two podium finishes, meaning he finished in the top three. He also earned two pole positions, starting from the very front of the race.
For the 2009 season, Max raced with Carlin Motorsport. He had a strong year, winning two races. He also started from pole position three times in the first four races.
Moving to GP2 Series
Max then moved to the GP2 Asia Series in 2009–10. This series is a step below Formula One. He later joined Ocean Racing Technology for the main GP2 Series.
In 2011, Max raced for his father's team, Carlin Motorsport, in GP2. He continued with Carlin in 2012. This was his best GP2 season. He got his first podium finish in Malaysia. He also won his first GP2 race in Hungary. Max finished fourth in the drivers' championship that year.
Formula One Journey
Testing with Force India
In November 2011, Max had a chance to drive a Formula One car. He tested for the Force India team in Abu Dhabi. This was an exciting step for him.
Racing for Marussia
Max became a test and reserve driver for the Marussia F1 team in 2012. In December 2012, it was announced that he would race full-time for Marussia in 2013.
In his first race, the 2013 Australian Grand Prix, he qualified 20th. His best finish in 2013 was 14th at the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix. Max made history in his rookie season. He was the only driver to finish every single race!
Marussia kept Max for the 2014 season. He achieved his best finish of 13th place twice. This happened at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix and the 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix.
Max's amazing streak of finishing every race ended at the 2014 Canadian Grand Prix. He was involved in a crash with his teammate. His Formula One career ended when the Marussia team faced financial problems and closed down. This meant he missed the last three races of 2014.
IndyCar Racing
Indy Lights
After Formula One, Max moved to America to race. In 2015, he returned to Carlin Motorsport to compete in Indy Lights. This series is a step before IndyCar. He won his first Indy Lights race in Iowa. He dedicated this win to his former F1 teammate, Jules Bianchi, who had passed away.
Chip Ganassi Racing (2016–2017)
In 2016, Max joined Chip Ganassi Racing in the IndyCar Series. This is a top-level open-wheel racing series in the United States.
