Tom McCarthy's Announcing Journey
Tom McCarthy has had a long and exciting career in sports broadcasting. He spent five seasons, from 2001 to 2005, with the Philadelphia Phillies. During this time, he was a radio play-by-play announcer. He also hosted their pre-game and post-game radio shows.
Early Career in Baseball and College Sports
Before joining the Phillies, McCarthy was the play-by-play announcer for the Double-A Trenton Thunder. He worked with them for six seasons, from 1994 to 1999. He also announced games for Rutgers University football. His voice was heard on national football and basketball broadcasts for various networks. These included the CBS Sports Network, the Atlantic 10 TV network, Westwood One, and the Sports USA Radio Network.
Returning to the Phillies
After two seasons, in 2006 and 2007, McCarthy worked for the New York Mets. He was a play-by-play announcer for their radio station, WFAN. In 2008, he signed a five-year deal to return to the Philadelphia Phillies. He became a full-time television play-by-play announcer in 2009. This happened after the sad passing of Harry Kalas. Tom McCarthy is one of only three announcers to have regularly covered both the Mets and Phillies. The others are Tim McCarver and Todd Kalas.
Calling College and Professional Games
McCarthy spent almost ten years announcing games for Princeton University. He covered both their football and men's basketball teams. He was the voice for the Tigers when they famously beat UCLA in the 1996 NCAA tournament. He also called their impressive 27–2 season in 1997–98.
In 2009, McCarthy announced games for the 2009 Caribbean Series. He did this for the MLB Network from their studios in Secaucus, New Jersey. He worked alongside Boston Red Sox Spanish language radio announcer Uri Berenguer.
NFL and MLB Broadcasts
Tom McCarthy has also called games for Fox NFL Sunday. He has announced many MLB games on Fox, especially those involving the Phillies. He is also a broadcaster for the NFL on CBS. His current partner there is Tiki Barber. McCarthy is one of the few broadcasters who cover both NFL and MLB games.
In 2020, he called his first prime-time NFL game. It was a Tuesday night matchup between the Buffalo Bills and the Tennessee Titans. McCarthy also serves as the play-by-play announcer for Cleveland Browns preseason games. He works with color commentator Joe Thomas.
On January 9, 2022, McCarthy filled in for CBS's main NFL play-by-play announcer, Jim Nantz. He called a game between the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nantz was unable to broadcast that week due to health protocols.
