Tomioka (富岡町, Tomioka-machi) is a Japanese town located in Fukushima Prefecture on the island of Honshu. It covers an area of about 68 square kilometers.
History of Tomioka
Tomioka is known for being close to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. In 2011, a big earthquake and tsunami caused a nuclear accident there. Because of this, Tomioka became part of a 20-kilometer "exclusion zone." This meant people had to leave the town for safety.
Even though people left, many animals continued to live in this "no-go zone." Part of the Fukushima Daini Nuclear Power Plant is also located in Tomioka. After the accident, the town's government temporarily moved to Kōriyama starting from March 17, 2011.
