Tomkins Mountain is a cool mountain in the North Carolina High Country. You can find it near a community called Deep Gap. Sometimes, people call it by other names like Thomkins Knob or Tompkins Knob.

Most of Tomkins Mountain is inside the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway. This mountain stands tall at about 4,075 feet (1,242 m). It's also a special spot because it marks where three different counties meet: Ashe, Watauga, and Wilkes counties.

What is the Eastern Continental Divide?

Tomkins Mountain is part of something called the Eastern Continental Divide. Imagine a line across the land. On one side, all the rain and melted snow flow towards the Atlantic Ocean. On the other side, the water flows towards the Gulf of Mexico.

From Tomkins Mountain, some small streams flow into the South Fork New River. Other streams flow into the Yadkin River. This shows how the mountain helps send water in different directions.

Where is Tomkins Mountain Located?

Tomkins Mountain is in the western part of North Carolina. It's a key part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are famous for their misty, blue appearance.

Two ridges also stretch out from the mountain. Laurel Spur Ridge goes south. Husons Ridge goes northwest, marking the border between Ashe and Watauga counties.
